TODAY'S ASSIGNMENT: Write Nancy Pelosi
You might remember last week where Congressman Jim McDermott (Dem-WA) got in hot water for not including the words under God while reciting the Pledge of Allegiance on Wednesday, April 28. In conjunction with Pete Sessions' whining and Simspon's altering of the Congressional Record, here are some of Nancy Pelosi's comments:

"All House Democrats expect the Pledge of Allegiance to be delivered as it is written with the phrase 'under God' and with respect for the pledge," said Pelosi, adding that she summoned McDermott to her office on Wednesday to express her displeasure privately.

DUers, you know what to do. Pelosi must not side against McDermott on this issue, especially if this means siding with Republican neo-cons like Sessions.

Her e-mail address is sf.nancy@mail.house.gov. Good luck!

1. Perhaps we should have "assignments" that actually have some chance
of determining the outcome of this election.

This is a non-issue and a non-story. We need to focus on things that the average voter will remember 6 months from now at election time.

Besides, all the e-mails in the world are not going to make Pelosi print a retraction or change her position. She was quite vehement in her opposition to McDermott's statement.

Don't waste your time, please. If you want to start an e-mail campaign, how about one related to the US soldier atrocities in Iraq? To me, that's much more important than whether or not McDermott should have said "Under God" in the pledge.

2. Understand where you're coming from...
...and I certainly want all those soldiers to get what they dserve. On the other hand, there's so much pressure on Democrats to stay united that we can't afford to have Pelosi gum up the works by scolding McDermott for upholding the First Amendment.

This election year isn't just about evicting Bush from the White House; it's about making sure that Democrats on the Hill will be united and ready when Kerry steps in. This is an issue, since involves free speech.

3. Agreed. Sorry about that.
I was a little too quick to criticize - sorry about that. An unfortunate side effect of reading too many "Kerry shouldn't be C-in-C" posts this morning.

It is an issue, and you're right. The last thing we need this election season is a fractured party consisting of multiple factions. Pelosi certainly seemed more interested in making a public show out of this than in doing what's right.

4. done. This is what I sent:
Subject: Representative McDermott and the pledge of Allegiance

I sincerely regret your response to Mr. McDermott. He is acting according to his conscience and his allegiance to the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. He is a patriot with no fundamentalist religious allegiance. In this respect he is like most of the thinking Democrats. Please do not side with the right wing on an issue of such importance as individual conscience and loyalty to country and not religion.
