KTVU in Oakland, CA has a commercial for a program they are running tomorrow about protesters "threatening to disrupt the democratic convention" which asks "are they protesters or are they just hoodlums?". All the shots of protesters in the commercial are of people wearing black with masks over their faces smashing windows etc.
The commercial alone presents a false image of protesters and I think serves to justify the silencing of dissent and the promotion of repression.
I think the show is on "mornings on 2" at 7am, but I'm not sure. If it's not, then I imagine it would be during one of their news programs at 6pm or 10pm. If you can record the programs you might want to complain about it to them at (510) 834-1212 ttp://www.ktvu.com/contact/index.html.
You might remember the very successful smear campaign they waged intentionally or not, during the lead up to the aggression against Iraq. Jennifer Joly reported from the street where she would gasp and report with a frightened tone "the protesters have just sat down in the middle of the intersection", and things of that sort, which made a rather typical and mundane activity seem like an extreme act of violence...
Assuming the program is as bad as I expect I will ask them why they do not approach football in a similar manner, since football fans are known to break windows and and break traffic laws... The point, of course, is that I think they are fear mongering for political reasons.
