CO: Dems mull strategy in 7th
Avoiding primary fight called key to unseating Beauprez

By Mike Soraghan
Denver Post Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON - Democratic Party officials want to avoid an intraparty squabble in their bid to unseat Republican U.S. Rep. Bob Beauprez, and are pushing for one of the two top contenders to withdraw from consideration.

They worry that a battle between Jefferson County District Attorney Dave Thomas and former state Sen. Ed Perlmutter could drain resources and cause bad publicity.

"Those two folks are talking to each other, and they understand a primary would not be a good thing if they can avoid it," said Colorado Democratic Party Chairman Chris Gates. He said he expects to know within two weeks who will run.

Party officials may be disappointed. Thomas and Perlmutter say they've made no agreement to avoid a primary.

2. Don't think so
Perhaps you're thinking of Tom Tancredo (also R-CO)? Beauprez is mainly known for winning the closest election in 2002....

6. No I am not a vet
Silly me. Veterans are always talking about how they did what they do for others, I am political for the same way.

4. Good
We need a cleared field. Perlmutter would be the best candidate, but whoever is the nominee has to win this seat. CO-7 is a MUST WIN in 2004. Without it, our chances of winning the House back will be hurt severely.
