A new statewide survey shows that familiarity is not always a good thing -- at least not if you're running for president.
The poll conducted by the Social Research Laboratory at Northern Arizona University shows that Joe Lieberman is the best known of all the candidates to registered Democrats who say they are likely to vote in the Feb. 3 primary. Fully 82 percent of those say they are familiar with the U.S. senator from Connecticut, versus 77 percent for Missouri Congressman Richard Gephardt and former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean.
But when asked for whom they would vote in presidential primary, 22 percent picked Dean. Only retired Gen. Wesley Clark, who had a 61 percent familiarity rating, pulled double digits among those who have made up their minds.
Pollster Fred Solop said that many Democrats apparently are waiting to be convinced: With less than two months until the election, 38 percent still had no preference.
The survey comes as Dean is making a swing through Arizona today, starting with a speech in Sun City to be followed by rallies in Yuma and Sierra Vista before going to New Mexico.
