Clark's Kosovo: Why he's testifying at the Hague
Kosovar Albanians were watching closely as General Wesley Clark testified against Slobodan Milosevic before the International Criminal Tribunal at the Hague this week. Shpend Ahmeti, a Kosovar graduate student, was particularly interested since he credits Clark with saving his family.

"We thought that the world did not care about us, a small place like Kosovo," the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government student said. "We thought that Kosovo would never be on anyone's map. However, we found out that some people cared about Kosovars who were in trouble. Every Kosovar knows that General Clark was leading that group of people."

In the spring of 1999, Clark was the Supreme Allied Commander of NATO. He oversaw the military campaign that resulted in Milosevic's fall from power, saving 1.5 million Kosovar Albanians from ethnic cleansing.

"You could have asked any three-year-old kid in Kosovo in 1999 after NATO troops entered Kosovo about who the most famous people are," Ahmeti said. "They would raise two fingers making the sign of 'v' for victory, shout 'democracy' and 'NATO' and mention the names of Clinton, Albright, but more than anyone, the name of General Wesley Clark."

"You don't appreciate freedom until you are deprived of it," Ahmeti said.

2. If we don't nominate Wesley Clark...
and, I admit, it seems to be an increasingly unlikely possibility, we will miss a once in a lifetime opportunity.

I've studied American politics for 35 years and it's very depressing. Most of the finest potential public servants are largely destroyed in the primary process-Eugene McCarthy, Morris Udall, Gary Hart, Bruce Babbitt, Bob Kerrey, and Bill Bradley come to mind. These men would have made exceptional presidents but they could not:

a: beat the media darling's momentum
2. beat the party establishment

When Adlai Stevenson lost to Eisenhower in 1952, he was asked how he felt. He quoted Lincoln who said, that, as a child, he stubbed his toe in the dark and "It hurt too much to laugh, and I'm too old to cry". That's how I feel about not having Wes take on Bush.

3. Hold your tears, dude
Wait until the votes are cast.

I've been in campaigns where we thought it was a lock, and then it all fell apart. I've been in campaigns where we were just staggering through the motions, things looked so bad, and the voters proved us wrong.

That's politics. Give it three months. By then it should be decided.

Considering the fact that four months ago there was no such thing as the Clark 04 campaign, we've come very far. There is really no practical reason to think anyone else is going to beat us.

I'm not being Pollyannaish but keep in mind what Hillary CLinton said. At this point in the process her husband was dead in the water. We all know how that one turned out.

4. I know the election has not even begun yet...

but I'm starting to see this is going to be harder than I expected. The recent flood of Dean endorsements is threatening-it seems everything's over before its begun. Just like 1972. Remember 1972? I take comfort from history. Every Democrat from the US Senate to local dog catchers endorsed Ed Muskie. Ed was unbeatable in New Hampshire (this was in ancient times before anyone had heard of the Iowa caucuses). Muskie had the full backing of 95% of elected Dems in the country and McGovern whipped his ass in New Hampshire and took the nomination on the first ballot (in spite of ABM-"Anybody But McGovern"). I sort of think that may be the best analogy-Dean as Muskie (okay, I know its a stretch, but at least its a new angle).

5. Agreed
I have a good friend who is a historian, writes books, teaches modern history etc. He had some very positve things to say about Clark and the campaign. Watch the South. Watch the money. All that needs to happen is for Clark to win a couple of those Southern primaries and the media will have to start paying attention. If Clark is doing well in fundraising this quarter, which he is, that means there is a lot of support for him.

And he also said that most folks aren't as hyper political as we are. They really don't care who Gore endorced. They really don't.
