CBS National Poll: Dean's Lead Solid, No Saddam Effect
Link to Full Results

December 14-16: After Saddam was captured
(December 10-13: Before Saddam was captured)

Dean: 23 (23)
Clark: 10 (10)
Lieberman: 10 (6)
Gephardt: 6 (5)
Sharpton: 5 (6)
Kerry: 4 (4)
Edwards: 2 (3)
Moseley-Braun: 1 (4)
Kucinich: 1 (3)
Don't Know/Other: 28 (24)

MOE=+/-4, but higher for subsamples like this one. See story for full details.

"Most voters believe, as Dean does, that the U.S. is no safer from terror in the wake of the arrest of Saddam Hussein.... 85 percent of Democratic primary voters think the threat to the U.S. will either rise or stay just as it is following Saddam's capture -- a feeling shared by 78 percent of all voters nationwide."

Dean also has the highest net favorables, at +21. Only Lieberman's support is firmer, according to the poll.

Standard disclaimers: (1) polls are imprecise measures; (2) they only capture a snapshot; (3) public opinion changes; (4) there is no national Democratic primary.

1. About
what I would expect in the Dem primary. Polls hold steady where they were following the Gore "bounce" with no appreciable impact from Saddam's capture.

3. Hey Tim (OT)
Congrats on making the front page of the Blog! Excellent job.

Also, my husband had his first solo yesterday -- just made it in the first 100 years!

Congrats again!

4. Thanks, Amerikav60!
And congratulations to your husband! Tell him to keep working at it. Winter may get very frustrating with weather delays (in many parts of the country), so he'll need some patience. But he'll get it. Just keep going.

And what about you?

6. Yeah, There's Actually a Term for That
In these polls, it's called the "Sharpton line." As in, "Wow, he fell below the Sharpton line."

We're all pretty sure that, at some point, the Democratic nominee will have to rise above the Sharpton line in national polling.

I think Al Sharpton is absolutely delightful in the debates, but the way. He's had some zingers. I loved his closer in the last debate which just silenced Koppel. :-)

7. Is that 4 national polls out this week
with Dean leading? Not to mention the slew of state polls he also leads. Makes me giggle at all the people who were freaking out about Saddam's capture hurting Dean.

Dean's gonna take this in a landslide. Kerry needs to tuck his tail between his legs and exit quietly. His showings the past couple of months have been worthy of his campaign (but not the candidate).
