LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Presidential candidate Howard Dean on Friday gained the endorsement of U.S. Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, a black Detroit congresswoman whose backing could give him a boost among the city's mostly black voters in the Feb. 7 presidential caucuses.
Kilpatrick formally endorsed the former Vermont governor in a conference call with reporters.
"I've looked over the field very intensely over the past couple of months, and I've come to the decision that Gov. Dean ... is the man at this time right now to move our country forward," she said. "I am confident the American people are saying ... `We want someone with new ideas,' and Gov. Dean is that person."
Asked how he planned to appeal to Detroiters, Dean said his overall message is one that should appeal to voters of any race.
