Dean Will Run TV Ad in Bush's Home State
WASHINGTON - Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean has chosen Bush country as the site for a second television advertisement that will begin broadcasting before any other candidate has gone on the air.

The ad will begin airing Monday in Austin, Texas. The goal is to show that Dean won't back down from President Bush, even in the city were he served as governor before moving to the White House.

The commercial will broadcast while Bush is vacationing at his ranch in western Texas and before any other presidential candidates have gone on the air.

The Dean campaign revealed few details of the ad, which was announced Friday on his Web site.

"The people of Texas know George W. Bush better than anyone," said the announcement. "Throughout this campaign, Howard Dean has been standing up to George W. Bush, and what better place to stand up against what George W. Bush has done to the economy and our nation than in Bush's home state of Texas."

1. Dean scores on guts if nothing else....
I give him credit for that. Kerry struck me that way when I saw him stand up to O'Reilly months ago and he delivers the occasional rhetorical punch. But in terms of action....well, Dean is really impressive.

2. I love it because once again Dean is taking the battle directly to *
even while he is at the ranch. Who knows Bush could be watching some sporting event on the sofa in Crawford, chewing (or choking) on a pretzel and suddenly on comes Howard Dean explaining how Bush has skrewed up the country.

4. You know what's cool...
The money for this ad would never have been raised, if not for a suggestion posted on Dean's blog by an average Joe/Jill that they were setting their sights too low at $250,000.

People-Powered Howard!

9. I know...
...isn't it great? A campaign where the suggestion of the "little guy" becomes part of the campaign. Who woulda thunk it possible? ;)

5. Dean TV Ad
This sure makes me wonder about Dean's ad campaign.

"The commercial will broadcast while Bush is vacationing at his ranch in western Texas and before any other presidential candidates have gone on the air."

Quote is from the link. Note, the ranch is in east Texas near Waco.

Which media outlets are going to "air" the ad? All this is probably a campaign for Dem Convention delgates. If that is true, Dean better not forget DFW, Houston, San Antonio and El Paso not to mention Albuquerque, NM.

6. I'm sure he won't
this ad campaign I predict will more than pay for itself in free media exposure with local news and national news coverage and excerpts from the ad itself.

7. You are quoting the reporter...
Not the Dean campaign. And, the quote is completely accurate.

10. Quote
Yes I did quote the quote accurately. However, the original quote about the location of the ranch is in error. Makes me wonder how much else about the quote is quotable.

13. Thanks for the kind welcome
and thank you very much for the informative links. I would very much like to see Dr Dean succeed. My thoughts are that he is promoting himself in a focused manner to win state delegates to the Dem Nat'l Convention next year. Many will say next week's ads in Texas are a direct affront to our simian foe but I think that is just part of Dean's objective. Remember, last week he was in Cal(recall), next week he is in TX (redistricting) despite being in competition with local political initiatives. We shall see how all this plays out over the next year.

14. How is this Dean's fault?
This is the reporters words not his or his staffs. I checked to be sure. The reporter wrote that section with no quotes and no words suggesting that he or she was paraphrasing or quoting anyone. Why do you think Dean or a member of his staff said this?

12. Original source: "Howard Dean is going up on the air in Austin, Texas."
You Are the First to Know
As promised, you here on the blog are the first to know.

We weren't able to do this until you came through for Howard Dean. From Friday the 25th of July through Monday the 29th, 9,621 Americans joined together to demonstrate the power of the grassroots-- and raised over $508,000 in the Dean Team vs. Bush-Cheney Challenge. Your tremendous accomplishment has enabled us to do this.

Beginning Monday, Howard Dean is going up on the air in Austin, Texas. In a television commercial recorded late this week, he will invite the people of Texas to join us in building the great grassroots campaign of the modern era-- whether by signing up online or using our new toll-free number, which will be revealed on Monday.*

The people of Texas know George W. Bush better than anyone. Throughout this campaign, Howard Dean has been standing up to George W. Bush, and what better place to stand up against what George W. Bush has done to the economy and our nation than in Bush's home state of Texas.

When we've said we're building a grassroots campaign in all 50 states, we've meant all 50 states. You have enabled us to bring Howard Dean's message to Texas. Help spread the word to the rest of the country by forwarding this blog entry, and ask your friends in every state to join us.

We'll have the commercial on the web at the right time, sometime over the weekend. There will be more coming. But on Monday, Howard Dean goes up on the air in Texas.

Update 6:27 pm: *Please note that the ad doesn't go up until Monday, which is when the 1-866 number will be fully operational. Until then, we've taken the number down. You were the first to see it. Thanks!

How the Tale Was Told
We told you that you, our supporters on the blog, would be the first to know about the plan. So why did we tell you tonight, three days before the commercials went up? Because Roger Simon of US News & World Report, a great investigative reporter, figured out the secret. Kudos to Roger! But we wanted you to hear it from us first.

16. Anyone else here going to the Travis County caucus?
I've never been to a caucus before.. I'm really excited already!

How do these things work? Do we show-up, vote, and then hang-out until the results are released.. or what?

Hurry up, 2004!
