Hillary Doesn't Crack Double Digits After All

With about 95 percent counted around midnight last night, Hillary was leading by 10 points. But now, with 99.44 percent counted, the Pennsylvania Secretary of State shows her winning 54.6 to 45.4. That's only 9.2 points--less than her 10.3 margin in Ohio, and less than the 10.5 bar that all-powerful CW-arbiter Mark Halperin had set for her.

Yet no one cares. The storyline is clearly that Hillary had a decisive victory which keeps her campaign alive.

Why isn't the reality of single digits a bigger problem for her? One reason is that the final margin often matters less than the presumed margin when people like Russert go to bed.

Another reason--one an Obama aide was just grumbling to me about--is the weird havoc exit polls play with the media's primary-night storylines. Yesterday's early exit polls had suggested a nail-biter that suggested Hillary might be finished. Yet, much like Super Tuesday, Hillary made a "comeback" over the course of the night, as her vote margin gradually widened. Why, it was almost as though Obama had Hillary on the ropes and she fought him off with pure grit and determination. Impressive! She's back!

If I were a Machiavellian Obama operative, next time I might consider leaking some phony exits showing misleading strength for Hillary.

the changing tides.

Watching Hillary's speech last night, the energy and optimism were palpable. What would have been a disappointing showing if the initial spread projections hadn't been revised (sometimes hourly), was instead viewed a resounding victory.

6. I wish I'd had a bet on this one
because I told both sides that this race would go to Clinton and that the margin would be a few tenths under 10%.

7. That's a loss, then.
She can't catch up in pledged delegates. Needed 10%, got 9.

8. Why can't Hillary close the deal?
In a state as ideally suited for her as Pennsylvania, all she can scrape up is a 9% lead? Not to mention that she has more debt than cash due to her inability to raise money from the grass roots.

11. For my very first post...
I am really asking myself a MAJOR question after last night's primary... Am I going to remain in the problem, or get into the solution!

What I mean is this... I am a "first time emailer, short time reader" who has recently found comfort in DU in what may be one of the greatest awakenings of my life... Politics! I am a 30 year Black woman who has NEVER been interested in politics the way I have been since my primary in California. I mean, REALLY INTO IT (campaigning, phone banking, donating, etc..)! Why mention that I am Black and have never been interested in politics??? B/c that is what Barack Obama & Hillary Clinton have BOTH done for me and I truly believe many others like myself, no matter the race, gender, creed, etc... Yes, BOTH OF THEM! Now, of course I am an Obama supporter, but I can not honestly say I would have this much passion about this election season had it not been for both Democratic contenders. Forgive me for my inability to write as eloquently as most here (I guess that is why it has taken me until now to reply to a thread).

After last night, as one of the newbies to this game and REALLY "hoping" that Obama could pull off a victory, I was devestated and heartbroken to get this rude awakening of how far our country has to go(I know it must be b/c I am so new to this), but I woke up this morning with a different thought in mind... How can I get into the solution? Isn't that what BO is asking us to do? I went through this bit of info about me to say that I was listening to Rush Limbaugh this morning and BTW... IF ANYONE OUT THERE PLANS TO VOTE FOR THE OTHER DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE, IF THERE FIRST CHOICE IS NOT CHOSEN, I BEG YOU TO LISTEN TO THIS GUY... PLEASE! TELL ANYONE YOU KNOW TO LISTEN TO HIM AND IF YOU STILL CHOOSE TO VOTE FOR THE REPUB OR STAY HOME... GOD HELP US ALL!

Sorry for the caps, but here is what I started thinking about... There is still a chance that my candidate won't win the election this year, but b/c my eyes have been opened and I refuse to no longer stay apathetic to my government... Is it possible for us "little people" to make some changes anyway? Isn't that the goal of what Barack Obama is asking of us... TO THINK? There has got to be a way for people like us here at DU to do more to ensure that we don't lose democratic voters when this is all said and done and we have our nominee. It's not gonna be easy, and I hate to say it, but it would have to be "Whites, reaching out to Whites", "Catholics reaching out to Catholics," "Blacks to Blacks," and the list goes one (I say this only b/c of how people relate to one another best, but I do believe we are not very different than one another here in America). I mean something more than just writing a thread... Come on fellow DUers, how can we use the "six degress of separation" to reach out to the masses!

Now, I know that this is a looooong shot, but the BIGGER picture here is that, someone, like me... a person who had no connection to politics up until this year, is thinking of ways to help our situation for the next generation. That's what I believe Barack Obama is asking for me to do and I can see from this site alone, MANY other people.

We have to keep up the fight as "we the people." I just wanted to say that even if things don't pan out the way I would "hope" and any of the rest of you, let's please ALL unite to find ways to fight and keep those like myself involved for a greater cause.

This is already a win for Barack Obama, he got someone like me to start thinking about America as a whole and that's a great Stepping Stone for the next generation. Am I alone on this?

I know it's cheesy, but I am new here.

13. sweetrage1913, a hearty welcome to you!
:toast: I'm glad you found us, and I love your enthusiasm! Be warned, politics is addictive, better than any soap opera I've ever seen. I'm hanging tough for Obama; I vastly prefer him, I believe in him, and I trust him. This from a middle-aged white woman who's supposed to be Clinton's base. There are quite a few of us here, too. I'm not giving up hope for a real change. Please keep posting; newbies like you I welcome.
Oh, and it being primary season, this place can be nuts, but you may have noticed that. It will settle down after we have a candidate. Emotions are running high. Keep your skin thickened and don't let anyone intimidate you. My sage wisdom for the day. ;)

17. Thanks for the warm welcome...
You guys are reading my mind... Not to get off subject in this thread, but... I am getting extremely addicted! I mean, I can't turn off the darn cable news... switching back and forth between CNN, MSNBC, FNC (those FNC commentator's just make my blood boil), etc and I can't turn it off. I don't even watch regular T.V anymore. Well, last night I couldn't take the "Clinton Spin" (not to offend any Clintonites), so I caught a movie, but other than that, I'm watching politics. I even keep my car radio on Stephanie Miller, Rhandi Rhodes or Rachel Maddow now (I used to listen to Hip Hip/R&B ALL the time and I just can't stand to hear the same old songs over and over again anymore... too much going on in the world for that).

Man oh man, I'm hooked! Being so new to it all, I really hope to find a way to be apart of "Change" (even if Obama is not the nominee).

Anyway, this is how hooked I am... I have exactly $3.05 in my bank account and I tried to donate it to Obama last night. I didn't know that they don't take under $5.00 . Oh well, my money is no good there, not until I get a little more. I can't wait until payday. I have bought shirts and donated before, but I just felt the need to give him a boost (even if only $3.05) last night.

I think I am truly hooked! BTW... How do I recommend a post?

Get that $3 up to $5, and you're in business!

On the bottom of the OP (original post) is a spot that reads 'recommend'; click on it when you see a good post; you can only recommend OPs, and they go to the Greatest page if they have 5 or more rec's. If you have any questions feel free to ask, me or anyone. I'm going out of town tomorrow, but will be back next week.

Enjoy your DU experience! :hi:

16. Terriffic 1st post!
Glad to see you've caught the bug on this politics thing...it is addictive. I thank George W. Bush for his work in getting everyone interested in politics again. When things are going reasonably well (like in the Clinton years), the tendency was to get complacent about our politics. Not anymore. It's literally a life-or-death decision.

I can imagine that you, as a black women, must have a unique quandary with which Democratic candidate to support - the first woman President or the 1st Black President? I'm happy with either, though I'm rooting for Obama to win the nomination.

Welcome onboard!

12. Do you even realize how petty it is? Rounding -- the traditional way -- does
make it 55/45. If it was Obama, would you have minded? God, you guys should really only post on GDP not to raise the blood pressure for teh rest of us!
