McClatchy: Clinton camp enraged by Michigan, Florida delegate solution
Clinton camp enraged by Michigan, Florida delegate solution

By Steven Thomma | McClatchy Newspapers

WASHINGTON — Just as Democrats headed toward the final votes of the long primary season with hopes of wrapping up the nomination, a party panel Saturday triggered what could be a bitter fight lasting through the summer and on to the Democratic National Convention.

The Rules and Bylaws Committee of the Democratic National Committee voted to restore delegate votes to Florida and Michigan, two states that had been stripped of all their votes for holding primaries too early in violation of party rules.

The panel essentially reduced the two states' votes by half, voting to seat all the delegates from both states, then give each a half vote.

But it also reallocated the delegates from Michigan, trying to remedy what members called a "flawed" primary where Clinton triumphed easily but Obama was not on the ballot.

Following a formula that tried to divine the wishes of voters by using exit polls as well as write in votes for Obama that weren't counted at the time, the panel took four delegates away from Clinton, and gave them plus all of the state's uncommitted delegates to Obama.

The result had little impact on the nomination battle, giving Clinton a small net gain on Obama but failing to dent his triple digit lead in delegates.

But it outraged Clinton supporters, many of whom stormed out of the meeting. And it prompted Clinton herself to tell her point man on the panel, Harold Ickes, that she reserved the right to take a challenge to the decision to the party's credentials committee later this summer and perhaps to the Democratic National Convention in Denver in August.

8. Ickes is trying to blame someone else. If he'd done a better job at the beginning,
her nomination would not have been in doubt.

He made several strategic mistakes early on. Had Obama not been such a strong candidate, they might not have mattered. But he is that strong and those mistakes have hurt badly.

5. "Clinton camp" not the same as "Clinton supporters"
The first is her formal campaign the second isn't. I'm not sure that this is McClatchy's best effort.

7. As a Hillary supporter, I just received their email and sent this reply:
Edited on Sat May-31-08 10:16 PM by SharonAnn
"I am saddened that it appears Hillary will not be the nominee. I had so hoped for her to be president.

However, I cannot possibly approve any proposed action that would take this to the Credentials Committee and dispute what was a very difficult compromise.

I wish strongly that it had gone the other way but it has become increasingly clear that her candidacy is not going to be, unless it’s at the ruination of the Democratic Party. I cannot participate in that.

This country needs a Democratic President, House and Senate and I cannot support any further action that will divide the party.

Please, tell her to give it up gracefully, as I know she can. I’m sure it’s an even more bitter loss for her than for us, but she must accept it, smile graciously and help to get a Democrat elected.

This is too important for any individual to continue fighting on and to participate in building walls and dividing our party."

I don't know if they'll tally the responses, pro and con, but I hope they receive a lot like mine.

I hate it when my candidate doesn't win. You are very gracious considering what you must be feeling.

Hillary will take this to the convention. It is my opinion that she is working with the Republican Party to help them win the upcoming election. Obama is a true Democrat. He is too far to the left for comfort.

The Washington Lobbyists and Multi-billion dollar corporations in this country don't want him elected. Hillary's mention of Kennedy's assassination will be even more chilling when it comes to fruition. No president will be afforded the right to stand up for the people. The days of Robin Hood are over.

Why do think cars are built in Mexico? Why do you think Illegal Immigrants are permitted to come here in droves-driving down the wages? Why do you think every election has some type of distraction to keep us from talking about the real issues? Does gender, race, abortion, delegate counts, elitism, flip-flop, etc...ring any bells?
