Councilman turns Dem, renounces GOP for ignoring working people

Councilman David Allan in La Mesa, California, announced at a Democratic Unity Picnic Sunday that he's converted to become a Democrat.

Asked why, he said our country's leaders have forgotten about the working person who they're supposed to serve. A former Republican, he has served on the Council for eight years and led efforts to establish a 9/11 memorial locally for La Mesa firefighters who went to New York to assist at the World Trade Towers. He's also worked hard on programs to help seniors and children.

Allan, a former firefighting union representative, will likely win his reelection despite changing parties in this long-time conservative bastion. Shortly after his conversion earlier this year, La Mesa flipped to a majority Democratic registration.

Now San Diego County is just 2% away from becoming a Democratic majority for the first time in 100 years.
