GOP struggles for anti-Sotomayor message

A week before her Senate hearings, Republicans are floundering in their efforts to trip up Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor, unable to find an effective message about why she's not fit to serve.

2. Do Democrats do the same thing?

When Roberts and Alito were confirmed, I know they had concerns, but I never remembered news stories about a concerted effort to derail them. Harriet Meiers was different because she was so vastly unqualified, it wasn't funny. I often think that republicans are still pissed off about Bork, who has been proven to be a nutcase, and to a lesser extent, Clarence Thomas, who's the intellectually laziest person on the court, that they would derail Jesus if the democrats nominated Him.

Democrats just sat back and watched the implosion.

Miers met with senators after her nomination was announced, and in those meetings she was ill-prepared and uninformed on the law.<19> Senator Tom Coburn told her privately that she "flunked" and " going to have to say something next time."

Early one-on-one meetings between Miers and the members of the Senate Judiciary Committee were said to have gone poorly, and the White House considered suspending them to focus on preparation for the confirmation hearings. In an unprecedented move, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter and ranking Democrat Patrick Leahy also requested that Miers re-do some of her answers to the questionnaire submitted to her by the Committee, noting that her responses were "inadequate," "insufficient," and "insulting" because she failed or refused to adequately answer various questions with acceptable accuracy or with sufficient detail

After Miers failed in these private meetings, Republican senators Graham and Sam Brownback began drafting a letter asking the President's office to turn over legal memoranda and briefs Miers had written for Bush, in order to elucidate her views on political matters.

4. the ironic thing is that the Repukes do the "We don't know anything about Obama!"

but they loved a guy they knew nothing about (other than he was Catholic), and they were happy to give him a lifetime appointment ...
