Kerry Seeks Probe On Karl Rove
Edited on Thu Aug-07-03 11:41 AM by DrFunkenstein
WASHINGTON (AP) - Environmental and commercial fishing groups asked the White House on Wednesday to explain the role President Bush's top political aide played in developing water policy in the Northwest.

<>

The request followed the disclosure that White House political adviser Karl Rove briefed dozens of political appointees at the Interior Department a year and a half ago about diverting water in the Klamath River in Oregon to help nearby farms.

Word of Rove's January 2002 briefing, which took place following a trip by President Bush and Rove to Oregon, was first reported last week by The Wall Street Journal. Rove made a second trip to Oregon before the Interior Department made its decision increasing the water flow to farms.

Sen. John Kerry, one of the Democratic presidential candidates, called on the Interior Department's Inspector General to look into whether "political pressure from the White House is intimidating staff and influencing policy."

"The Bush Administration needs to understand that federal agencies like the Interior Department are not a division of the Republican National Committee and at their disposal to give out political favors," said Kerry.

Interior Department spokesman Mark Pfeifle, who attended Rove's January 2002 meeting, said the Klamath water diversion issue took up "probably 30 seconds to a minute" of a 25-minute presentation.

Pfeifle said the rest of Rove's presentation was taken up discussing matters such as outreach to suburban voters who are interested in environmental issues and to labor unions supporting oil drilling in the Alaskan wilderness.

3. What About His Enron Holdings
Rove evidently sold about $100k of Enron stock at high prices pre-collapse. Was he tipped off by insiders, possibly. But we should know what the circumstances were.

6. Way to go Kerry
We've been bitching about Rove for years (for good reason), now it's time to get constructive with our rage and bring this man down.

7. Investigating Rove: It's a good thing
At least that is what Martha Stewart would say. If anyone was guilty of blatant insider trading, it's this guy.

9. Probing Karl Rove
<>

Rove, 48, was born in Colorado, grew up in an apolitical household and caught the political bug after the family moved to Utah. In 1971 he quit the University of Utah and moved to Washington to become executive director of the College Republicans.

In 1973, he and the College Republicans were accused of encouraging dirty tricks during the Watergate campaign year of 1972. The Republican National Committee, which was then chaired by Bush's father, investigated and eventually exonerated Rove, who blames political opponents from his chairmanship race for spreading false allegations.

He has had a Bush connection for 25 years, having first met George W. Bush while working as an assistant to Bush's father at the RNC in 1973-74.

Rove is Bush's whirling dervish, a man in perpetual motion. No part of the campaign escapes his eye – strategy, organization, message, polling, media, issues or money. "He dominates a campaign," says friend and fellow Republican strategist David Weeks. "Nothing ever happens that he's not aware of."

Bush is as loyal to Rove as Rove is to his candidate. "He's a friend," Bush said. "He is a very unique and very smart and very capable person. He is – he's just Karl, and when everybody understands what 'just Karl' means, we all get along."

17. This isn't just politics, either....
This is about the waterways that Kerry loves. He has been actively involved in their preservation for three decades.

Nice to see him go after the REAL top gun, though.

24. Some wishy-wash this Kerry is
I feel the same way, that this should receive a lot more press. But as it has been in the recent while, nobody seems to want to pay attention to Kerry. Kerry's focusing on the Republicans like he should, and he should stay that way, only going off course to defend himself.

the press didn't cover it. If it wasn't up on this board we never would have heard ourselves. Big media blackout of most of the candidates.
