Lieberman MEETUP FIZZLES
from the Hartford Courant's Aug 9, 2003 Caucas http://www.ctnow.com/news/politics/hc-caucus0809.artaug09,0,1863923.story?coll=hc-headlines-politics

Looks like Joe Lieberman's campaign Web effort is running a few electrons short.

The Lieberman campaign's website Wednesday alerted supporters they could get together that night through the "Meetup.com" website. Other candidates, notably former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, have used it as a key organizing tool.

But the response to Lieberman's bid was so tepid the meetings were canceled. Meetup spokesman Myles Weisslander reported that people in 58 cities showed interest in meeting, but it takes at least five people to hold a session.

In none of the cities did at least five people respond.

2. Ouch
I really don't like Lieberman, though I don't think he's anything close to a republican. This is kind of sad. I wish he'd just drop out and stop making a fool of himself.

6. I Don't Like Him, But
His support has little to do with young Party activists on the net. And while grassroots momentum can bolster a candidate in the primaries, it is not the only criteria for candidacy.

Nevertheless, I don't think he has much enthusiasm even from his core groups. With no grassroots support and not much money flowing, that spells an early withdrawal in my book.

7. The sooner the better
Once he drops out, one assumes that he'll drop the "Democratic Party is going to the leftwing dogs" scare tactic. I'm sure he's convinced himself that this is the only way to separate himself from the herd, but if he's not gone by January, it's going to really hurt whomever gets the nomination.

8. It seems to me people got elected before MeetUp...
I'm supporting Dean but, to be fair, the internet isn't everything. Lieberman's success or failure does not rest solely (or even greatly) on his MeetUp numbers.

11. True, but Meetup has become a barameter of grassroots support
Dean has been able to tap into the grassroots to do basic campaign tactics, like writing personal letters to undecided voters in Iowa and New Hampshire. And some of these letters must have been effective since Dean has surged into the lead in those states.

9. I had the unfortunate opportunity to be available to watch Joe
on C-Span's Road to the Whitehouse. A more painful hour of television has never ocurred in the history of politics. Put a fork in him...

10. to be fair...
A last minute announcement by the Lieberman camp doesn't spell doom for the candidacy. Dean meetups in Bozeman MT took well over 6 months to get more than 5 people, and Dean' (and Kerry's and other's) people have been on this for months.

15. He's leading because he has more name recognition than the others
And to be honest, most of these polls are based on who we know and not what we know about them. The real test is to see how Lieberman will stand up once his message gets out there and the voters can see how his message compares to others who are running for president.
