State Sen. Mary Squires of Norcross said Tuesday she plans to pursue her underdog U.S. Senate campaign even if former Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young enters the race.
Squires wants to become the first woman in Georgia history elected to the U.S. Senate.
Young, who has not been in the political arena since his unsuccessful 1990 run for governor, has indicated he is seriously considering a Senate bid and might announce by the end of September. There had been speculation that Young's candidacy would derail Squires' plans, but she dismissed the idea.
"I'm staying in it," she said in a telephone interview. "I'm completely committed to this race."
