Dean shifts gears as status changes
Onetime insurgent is emerging front-runner

Howard Dean, who had planned to run as an insurgent on a shoestring, is adjusting his campaign to befit his new lot in life: the well-funded, emerging front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination.

The race remains far too close and volatile to consider any of the nine candidates a true front-runner in a contest much of the public is ignoring, but several rival campaigns now privately talk of the Vermont Democrat as the man to beat. Several challengers are adjusting their campaigns to prepare for a one-on-one showdown with Dean.

Dean has been getting tutored on foreign policy by numerous experts, including retired Marine Gen. Joseph P. Hoar. He has also had several private conversations with retired Army Gen. Wesley Clark, the former NATO commander who some Democrats see as an attractive running mate for Dean if Clark does not join the race himself.

1. I always thought
a Dean-Clark ticket would be a good one, and here's why: Clark brings military/foreign expertise, plus he's from the South. Another good matchup would be Dean-Graham.

4. I don't understand what/why/which/what for... the South is any concern

for a general election? Can someone explain this to me? I understand the primaries but not general election!

Give'em up. You're going to lose the electoral votes so why waste your time and money in the South. Why work hard when you're never going to get more than 49.9% of the vote? You're going for a win not votes! The Dem. candidate should be working on the rest of the states!

It's funny, I thought Dean would be the VP because he had all the enthusiastic supporters, who turn out, which the P would need to show off in the media. But it's working out Dean's VP will be the counter balance. I don't know anything about Clark but I hope he doesn't assassinate Dean!

2. Dean will poll 67% of the popular vote by Nov. '04. His campaign has
been PERFECT and his administration will be also. A brilliant statesman as the leader of the U.S. It's always darkest before the dawn.

3. I'm a Dean Supporter
But I won't lie to myself and say his campaign has been perfect. He has had his foibles. He is running a solid campaign, as is Kerry. If we want Dean to win we can't delude ourselves he will coast to victory, we have to help him struggle against the current in this race.

5. I gave $50 bucks 4 months ago! And they haven't asked for anymore
even though they've got my data. So I'm thinking of giving a little more.

And if we could get Internet news to common citizens, I don't think Junior would be the Repuke nominee. (Also a few honest Congressional investigations.)

And... I say if the news stays the same, Junior will have a clinical 'nervous breakdown' within 1 year.

6. I maintain 'as close to perfect' as possible. His alleged gaffs have been
attention getters and have been handled masterly. The accusation of 'angry', 'emotional', etc. are perfect and what is required in a populist revolutionary campaign. It's ALWAYS about numbers and his numbers have risen STEADILY even during his periods of supposed mistakes.

Almost always when one heard of Dean 'having to apologize', 'changed positions', etc. the numbers continued to climb and the detractors only added to his publicity. His MOST IMPORTANT OBJECTIVE has been getting attention for as he has been 'discovered' the U.S. publics' response has been overwhelmingly positive.

As far as Kerry it must be said that his campaign seems to have been developed BEFORE Dean entered the race and their response has been to act as if Dean didn't exist. They have been unable to posture an effective response.
