WASHINGTON — Historian Douglas Brinkley has signed a contract to write a book about Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry and his Vietnam experience. That makes five potential Democratic presidential candidates who will have books on the shelves late next year as the political primary season heats up.
Tour of Duty: John Kerry and the Vietnam War, due next fall from Viking Press, will examine Kerry's service in Vietnam, his subsequent anti-war activities and the effect of Vietnam on his political career. Kerry kept journals during and after the war. He has turned them over to Brinkley with photographs and letters home to his mother.
Best-selling author Brinkley, director of the Eisenhower Center for American Studies at the University of New Orleans, calls the material "a treasure trove" of detail on everything from gunboat patrols on the Mekong River to the emergence of the anti-war movement at home. "I'm telling a story about America and Vietnam," Brinkley says. "It's not a campaign book or a political biography."

John Kerry. The film, "Brothers in Arms," focuses on the presidential candidate's Vietnam experience. But
Alexander is tagging along on Kerry's presidential campaign, because "at every stop, someone brings up the war." Alexander, an unabashed Kerry supporter, believes the Massachusetts Democrat's campaign won't rev up till next month, adding, "For now, Howard Dean can get all the attention."
