New Dean meme? "Dean the Rockstar"
It's funny, at the same time Dean gets compared to just about everyone in the history of politics (i.e., the Slate piece, etc.), the one word that has been popping up near and far is "rockstar." "Dean the rockstar." "Dean's campaign event is like a rock concert." "He's like a rockstar with that following." Etc. From the cable news shows, to the mainstream papers, to the small town papers, it has just sort of started showing up (esp. after the Sleepless Summer Tour).

I wonder if this is a good thing or a bad thing, though... Another day, another meme (at least this one is kind of cool to play around with).

1. why are you complaining?
"rockstar" is clearly supposed to be a compliment.

To be perfectly honest, there's a level of paranoia among Dean Campaign people that I find incredibly unnerving. It's almost as if you're looking for something to be angry at. (oops, another "meme" I guess)

..but then again, only the paranoid tend to survive.

Anyway, as a Graham supporter, Happy Labor Day. Your candidate has earned his success by clearly out-working the rest of the field. Congrats.

2. yes, i know...
actually, I think it is cool as hell that he has the rockstar label - he certainly has earned it and the sleepless summer tour was a huge success.

i guess i was just wondering out loud if that would get picked up on in a negative sense/how it could be spun. maybe we are paranoid, but i think sometimes that the appearance of paranoia is more just a rabid interest/support of the campaign. i've never seen a group of campaign supporters who are ALWAYS looking to go the extra mile for a candidate as the Dean supporters seem to be. Maybe that will change as the other candidates revv up on the campaign trail, but up till now the Dean campaign has really evolved into a movement (at least, among its supporters).

Good luck to Graham, too - he seems like a very decent guy who is trying to do the right thing, esp with re: to 9/11 stuff.

3. This is the best of DU
When people supporting different candidates can wish each other well and have a civilized conversation. This is one reason I came here-I got tired of going on boards where I was called names and I was personally attacked for my views. I personally admire both Graham and Dean-and my hat's off to their two supporters from this thread!

5. yes, hat's off to them...
whew, I thought this was gonna end up a flame. Good for you both for not doing just that!

anyways, I like both Graham and Dean. Graham's done a lot for education and 9/11 stuff and Dean has done a lot for those that oppose the unjust war in Iraq and gay civil unions (I didn't say marraiges, Dean doesn't support "marraiges", but "civil unions". Virtually the same thing...correct me if i'm wrong, though).

4. Graham is one of the good guys.
I can't remember when he has not been in politics here. I do not believe the polls about people not supporting him for speaking out against Bush. I will never believe that. I often wonder who the Mason Dixon people call.

6. How many rockstars belonged to the Maidstone Club, and went
to St Georges and Yale?

7. One of the 3 main goals of Dean's campaign is to get MORE people involved
in the political discussion.

Dean's Campaign is "Dean For American" not "Dean for President."

Whether or not he wins the nomination and Presidency, Howard Dean intended to create a MOVEMENT to restore this nation to our ideals, and he's succeeding so far.

8. Haha...
I have the same "nickname". I think it's an endearing and cute moniker for him after his Sleepless Summer "Tour", and cool to boot. Go Doctor (rockstar) Dean!!!

13. Great photo!
After Dean and Kerry both playing guitar on the campaign trail, I'm waiting for Bush to try and pick one up. Now that would be truly funny.

12. Bush campaign did that before the primaries.
Avoided policy issues and details and wanted to look like it was inevitable that he be the chosen one.
