Dean rally on C-SPAN right now.
Edited on Sun Aug-31-03 05:50 PM by Jim Sagle
Short speech (already over). Now he's working the crowd.

It's in Falls Church, VA. It was held last Saturday.

Now he's answering questions.

Now Joe Trippi announcing about 4.500 in attendance. IN VIRGINIA!

Now we're on the campaign bus. Burlington Free Press reporter Sam Hemingway saying that this Howard Dean is someone never seen as governor - then Dean was soft-spoken and never spoke off the cuff.

3. Now they're on his plane, The Grassroots Express.
A campaign worker shows off a plant she said they bought at a Dollar Store.

Now Eleanor Clift is babbling. She actually is impressed.

5. Now the plane is readying for landing.
Edited on Sun Aug-31-03 06:12 PM by Jim Sagle
(A reporter inteviewed one of Dean's volunteers, Carol Moore. )

Now we're in Milwaukee. Yay!!!!!! (My old hometown.) It was the second stop.

Now he speaks at Mitchell International Airport.

Not a hippie or a birkenstock in sight. (That's not a slam at hippies or birkenstocks, it's a slam at right-wing talk show sound bytes.)

Nest he autographed a Time magazine and the back of a woman's blouse.

Now he works the crowd, shaking hands and trading sound bytes.
(But he tells one Muslim lady about her concerns: "I can't address that in a 10-second sound byte.")

A lady says we have to fight "mad cowboy sisease."

Now an interview woth Dean volunteer Carin Carstens. She was unemployeed and turned to dean volunteering. She likes his charisma, his practicality and his honesty.

Now he's at the Four Points Sheraton.

Next stop, Boise Idaho.

12. Who is Carol Moore?
Edited on Tue Sep-09-03 06:38 PM by gully
She mentioned "Michael" asked her to have a Dean event or some such thing? Is she related to 'the' Michael Moore.

She seemed to be a person they focused on for some time, I wondered if she is 'noteworthy'?

Sorry to kick this up, but am very curious.

6. Has anyone noticed that the CSPAN feed
has been really choppy in the past few weeks? I think this is a good sign that more people are watching, but it's annoying at the same time.

7. On the plane to Boise...
Edited on Sun Aug-31-03 06:26 PM by Jim Sagle
he's examining a black woman's foot. She's from Dallas. Whatever advice he gave is unknown, since he properly shooed the press away.

Now Joe Trippi is explaining how the primary horse race is going.
He defends the quick-start approach. He sounds knowledgable.

Landing at Boise...still not a red or a pink in sight. Guess Savage got it wrong again.

At Boise, he slams w's tax "cuts", pointing out how state taxes have risen as ad direct results.

Now a young black Dean supporter is being inteviewed. She said she had not been a Dean supporter but became one after seeing him this morning.

8. Next stop Portland Oregon.
Edited on Sun Aug-31-03 06:45 PM by Jim Sagle
An interview with Press Lead Matt Vogel. He likes Dean's fiscal conservativism and social liberalism, and his "unpacked" personality.

Lots of volunteers scurrying, wiring stuff up, etc. Plenty of very smart, pleasant people work to make these events happen.

Vogel is concerned about crowd stampedes. He and another campaign worker resolve his concerns.

The rally is at Portland State. A huge crowd has assembled in the courtyard. Some local loudmouth is addressing them.

Vogel is getting a hassle from a campus security cop who doesn't want to open up the roof area to relieve overcrowding on the ground.

(I'm going to break off close coverage at this point on the grounds that none of you gives a fuck about the behind-the-scenes inside baseball stuff.)

9. They never showed Dean's speech at Portland.
Edited on Sun Aug-31-03 06:54 PM by Jim Sagle
Now he's in Seattle, and C-SPAN is interviewing faces in the crowd. First up was a Larouchebag.

Now Dean opens up: "If you can't get the economy right and foreign policy right, then you need a one-way ticket back to Crawford, Texas."

As he works the crowd afterwards, Kool and the Gang's "Celebration" plays in the background. Woo hoo!

The crowd chants "Howard!"

New York Times Chicago Bureau Chief Jodi Wilgoren gives her impressions - big crowds, but what will they do for the next 15 months? (What a bozo.)

It's huge. And multi-colored, no matter what the Beltway spinners say.
