Dean Reacts To Clark's Decision To Run
Dean Calls Clark 'Great Candidate'

UPDATED: 8:58 a.m. EDT September 17, 2003

BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Former Vermont Gov. and presidential candidate Howard Dean reacted to retired Army Gen. Wesley K. Clark's decision to join the pool of Democrats running for president Tuesday night.

Dean said he's had "extensive discussions" with Clark but did not ask Clark to be his running mate.

"I think he will be a great candidate," Dean said. "He's smart, he knows defense and military issues. Of course he's getting a late start, but I think he'll be a great addition to the race."

1. I hope they can keep a cordial relationship
The General will be running on his defense and national security credentials and the Doctor will be running on his domestic record (both were smart enough to oppose the war). It will be interesting.

3. So much for all those snerky posts on Dean wanting Clark
to be his VP! And I give them as much credence as I do all the other lies that a few notorious posters come up with in their agenda to make their candidate look just a little bit better. }(

4. The Dean Campaign Leaked That Story
Trying to undermine Clark's announcement by subtly suggesting that he isn't top-tier material. He did it again here by slipping in that Clark is running late.

Kind of like when he called Graham a second-tier candidate. Or when he dismissed the anti-war positions of Sharpton, Moseley-Braun, and Kucinich as not viable candidates.

Isn't ironic that he used these guys to defend himself from actually having to back up his calls to get "mouthy" with Kerry?

The straight-shooter speaketh with forked tongue. Hiss hiss.;-)

8. It was confirmed that they have spoken
on several occasions- in CA at the time of the last media gush, I think. It was never confirmed by Clark, Dean, Dean's people or Clark's people that the VP position was discussed. That is pure invention and speculation by reporters and their readers.

9. Don't Kid Yourself
Clark spoke with ALL the major candidates. This was definitely leaked as a story to the press. It is a legitimate move to decapitate your opponent, just not a very ethical one.

10. funny...cause the original story said
that it was sources close to the meeting, without really saying from which camp the leak came.....

Now if you consider the Clark teams leak on the day that Edwards was announcing, and the fact that Dean had nothing to gain by leaking a story about potential VP when he was pretty sure that he was going to run (How did he know....Clark isn't his VP....)

So if I had to pick who it was that leaked the story, i'd say it was the Clark camp in an effort to try and embarrass the Dean camp...but it didn't work...at least not as well as they buried Edwards announcement spotlight....

How's that for a come back...

16. The reporter from the NY Times
Go talk with him, he will tell you that his sources are "friends of General Clark", why he changed this to a more generic word, he can only answer too.

6. why? I wanted Clark as a running mate

11. Dean/Clark may not be a viable ticket
See DailyKos Clark's team takes shape

If Clark follows the Clinton-Gore top-down campaign model, then he won't be compatable with Dean.

13. hmmm
I wonder if Dean might become compatible with a different campaign model if it suited him?

14. If Dean goes with the old hierarchal model, he'll lose his support
Dean's campaign is about getting people excited about politics and his campaign is structure to fit that model. The top-down structures are closed structures and suffer a sclerosis of the imagination, which is why they can't excite the base.

Remember, Bill Clinton could not excite the Dem base the way Dean is doing.
