How close will Dean get to 15 million dollars?
First off, this is not flame bait.

Okay, so team Dean is trying to reach $15 million by tomorrow at midnight, but they are currently at $12.84 million (as of 3pm EST 9/29). In order to make their goal, they will need to bring in about $64,000 per hour. Can they do it?

If not, how close will they come?

If they do not make their goal (which would be a first), will people say it is due to the Clark factor or will the fact that they broke Clinton's fundraising record overshadow an incomplete goal?

How much money will the other nine raise?

1. I'm thinking Trippi has something up his sleeve
He has said that there are contributions coming in through the mail, at house parties, etc.
I'm wondering if they don't have a million or so more than is posted, waiting -- so that supporters will panic and send more $ in.

(For the record, I'm a Dean supporter, and I think Trippi's a genius -- but there could be at least a touch of Machievelli (sp?) in him.)

3. I was wondering the same thing
I could see him doing it to build excitement. I also seem to recall, earlier this month, him saying that they were going to pass $15 million.

Still, it will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

2. They'll make it. They're bring in teams of volunteers starting today
to count the checks piled up in bags. They only question is if they can count it all in time to make the reporting deadline.

23. I believe all checks
that were mailed in and postmarked by Sept. 30 can get counted for this quarter, so it may take a couple days to show all their numbers, but I believe that they will hit the $15M mark when all is accounted for.

24. I believe the reporting deadline is Thursday, so they'll have a couple
of days to count the checks that were postmarked by the 30th but are just laying there in bags.

4. I think snail mail checks will put them over $15 mil but the $5 mil
I'm not sure of. Of course, there are House Parties tonight and there are those, like me, who like to donate extra on the last day of the quarter.

It will be close, but then again, Dean has already trounced Clinton's fundraising record for a single quarter and the Gov. did it as a candidate in a crowded field and with small time donations. Clinton was a sitting Prez and had access to large time donors.

5. The press couldn't care less
about the bats. The only people who care are Dean supporters and detractors. The story will focus on the oodles of cash he raised.

10. If we're too squeamish to get involved in fundraising...
...then there are plenty of large, multinational conglomerates that will take the brunt of it for us, without any fuss or fanfare to upset you.

Just don't wonder why your candidate is either A) completely drowned-out in the media, or B) a complete corporate shill.

8. No. We had 10 million to start.
We're still going for five million in the last ten days of the quarter, for a total of 15.

13. The original goal was raising $5 million ONLINE in 10 days
It did not appear that they were going to make that goal by the pace they were at. But if they raise $15 million through all sources by for the third quarter, that would be impressive indeed. That would be more than any Democrat has raised ever, even Bill Clinton when he was President.

14. No. It was always $5 million from all sources,
just as previous bats counted mail and phone as well as online contributions.

16. The goal was never $5 million ONLINE
It was $5 million in the last 10 days. It wasn't completely clear when they first announced it, but they never said it was just on-line. They clarified that this included all on-line sources, house parties, fundraisers, everything.

http://blog.deanforamerica.com/archives/001530.html

$5 Million online would've been insane. Even Trippi knew that.

11. I concur w/others re: Trippi
He appears to be be too savvy a politico to over reach. I could be wrong...it *has* happened in the past (me being wrong that is)

On the other hand (there's always another hand out there)
The Sleepless Summer Tour -- ending in NYC etc. cut the "new" goal pretty damn close--although the initial goal was a foregone conclusion, it appears.

Should be interesting to see.

As for media hype-- that's anyone's guess these days. All eyes are on CA it appears. The damn media whores were joking about it--saying that the Dems should go to CA to get press--Uh--the press should go to the stories--not the other way around asswipes. (Sorry--I just want to pummel the on-air talking heads) Public shaming-- that's the ticket.

12. I heard about the bags of mail contributions and...
...also there are house parties tonight where they'll be doing some fundraising at the houses, so probably about 9pm-12am you'll see a big spike after the projected "world's largest conference call" has completed.

That having been said, GIVE!

19. Yep, a big spike. A big, big, big,
spike. Just found this on the blog:

No off-line contributions have been added to the bat today. Later this evening, when we have a final figure for the day and for the house party, we will add them in. We'll let you know on the blog when that happens.

Check out the number of contributions, and you will see. This is about people more than dollars. Of course the dollars are great too. We're going to need them.

18. Until publicly funded campaigns are installed, raising cash is the
norm for all politicians.

At least Dean is getting his cash from thousands of average people, who are inspired by him; whereas, Bush is getting his from fat cats who need to go on a diet.

20. I predict he will get over $15 million
first this is just on-line support right now, they have not added any money coming in from the mail today but will later tonight along with totals from over a 1,000 house parties for Dean which are being held tonight.

Edited on Mon Sep-29-03 04:39 PM by Loyal
I do have one question though, that people more knowledgeable than me can maybe answer. Is the 15 million goal just for September, or for the whole third quarter?

26. He'll get over 15 mil
He'll hit about 15.2 or 15.3. Trippi won't let him be under.

As for the rest of the bunch, I think that Kerry and Edwards will have more than people expect, and that Lieberman, Graham, and Gephardt will underperform severely. As for Clark, he'll have a fair amount, enough to warrant a lot of media attention.

28. I hope you are right
I think right now they are just putting online contributions on the bat but eventually when they count up all the money coming in and all the money raised tomorrow at Union Station in California, we should make it. I hope.

27. offline donations haven't been added to the total yet
At 10 PM the bat stands $12,986,647 with 154,146 contributions. We haven't added any offline money to the bat yet today -- you, the blog, have been driving this bat all day.

The finance staff is still receiving reports from the house calls and counting the mail and phone money, which should be ready by midnight.

Let's give them a fresh bat for all of that. This bat was yours all day, and you've been building it. It's yours to put to bed. You've raised more than $320,000 online today. Let's break this bat this hour!
