New poll: Clark heads the pack in New York; Bush fades

ALBANY — Wesley Clark is among the leading Democratic candidates in New York just two weeks after he entered the presidential race, according to a poll of state voters that also shows President Bush’s ratings falling.

Bush support among New Yorkers has dropped since June to the point that he now trails five Democrats that he previously led in the heavily Democratic state, according to The Qunnipiac University poll released Wednesday.

“Is Gen. Clark the real deal or the flavor of the month? In this snapshot, he’s a top choice of New York Democrats,” said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

Clark, a retired general with no political experience, was at 18 percent in the Quinnipiac survey released Wednesday. Former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean had 17 percent support, Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut 13 percent and Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts 12 percent.

The numbers were within the poll’s margin of error of plus or minus 5 percentage points for Democratic voters. The remaining candidates in the 10-way field were in single digits.

each of the major candidates beats Bush. Dean went from 9% in previous poll to 17% in this one. Good news for both Clark and Dean.

So I think this helps him most. Dean is a NY native. He should be ahead of Clark.
