Clark Raises More Than $3.5M in Two Weeks
Retired Gen. Wesley Clark Raises More Than $3.5 Million for Campaign in First Two Weeks

The Associated Press

WASHINGTON Oct. 5 — Wesley Clark raised more than $3.5 million in the first two weeks of his presidential race, beating some of his Democratic rivals who have been campaigning for months.
Roughly two-thirds of Clark's money was raised over the Internet, campaign spokeswoman Kym Spell said.

Clark received donations from 21,000 people, with contributions averaging $167.

Congratulations to the Clark Campaign and his supporters. That's a lot of dough in 2 weeks.

1. How much of that was from pledges made to the Draft Clark campaigns?
If they are mostly IOU's from pledges made to the Draft Clark campaigns then Clark didn't raise $3.5 million in 3 weeks. He collected IOU's in 3 weeks, but pledges were made months earlier.

6. This is the best you can do?
All internet donors were asked to specify if their donation was based on a pledge. I sent $100 (not a pledge and I'm going to start donating a dollar everytime I read the following statements on the DU boards:

I will not vote for Clark if he is the Democratic nominee.

I don't want a General for president.

He's not a real Democrat.

I may up the ante for some of the more bizarre crap.

Thank you for donating to the Clark campaign

9. Not to slight Clark, but that was MY question too...
6 months of pledges that turn into "contributions" immediately upon candidacy don't equate to $3.5M in contributions in 3 weeks to me...

13. I was serious about not slighting Clark....
What have I posted in the past that would lead you to this conclusion? Yes, I'm supporting Dean, but I've made it clear that I find Clark interesting as a candidate. It's an honest question.

15. How is that question a slight against Clark?
It is asking for an accurate reflection of the contributions.

23. About 1.8 or 1.9M was pledged from Draft Clark campaigns.
I don't know how much of that's been collected to date.

10. I am not really attached to the money-raising issue
But certain of the Dean people seem to think that fundraising is a major measure of suitability for office.

16. I hope you're independantly wealthy....
Cause you're gonna be hearing those words MANY times as the race heats up and narrows to Clark and whoever comes in second. I expect you'll be declaring bankruptcy by Christmas (but the Clark campaign will love you!)

I'm going to send more.

(I heard on CNN that on the day Clark announced, the campaign said they had $8,000. The 3.5 million is obviously cash they now have and not IOU's or pledges posted on the draft websites.)
on edit: I see what you're saying though

17. Excellent!
Dems are proving that we are ready and willing to donate to and support the fight against Bush.

This is such good news -- I am a Dean supporter and of course would like to see him get all the money  but I am a Democrat first, and I love to see the Dems forking out the cash for our candidates.

Money = commitment, and we are going to need it.

18. Simon Rosenberg: Democratic field collectively will have outraised Bush
Edited on Sun Oct-05-03 12:50 AM by w4rma
Dean still on top of money race

Simon Rosenberg, who heads the centrist New Democrat Network, put the Dean bounty in perspective by noting that in a 10-candidate field the former Vermont governor was able to raise 50 percent more than Bill Clinton raised in the best quarter of his 1996 re-election effort. Rosenberg called Dean’s feat “almost miraculous” and added, “We have to recognize that the Dean campaign is the best-run campaign we’ve ever seen.”

Taking the party-wide view, Rosenberg pointed to what almost no one else has noticed: Based on the preliminary estimates for the third quarter, the 10-person Democratic field collectively will have outraised the Bush campaign, an indication of how fired up Democratic donors are.

“If Bush is this supposed fund-raising king, then this so-called ‘weak’ Democratic field — to use Karl Rove’s word — is outraising him,” Rosenberg said.

24. Kick -- Dems outraise GOP
Remember: Dems outraised Republicans. Despite all the internecine Dem warfare, most of the barbs really are against President Bush.

Also, it's a positive sign for after the primaries. We're building up--and, as a Clark supporter I admit that Dean pioneered this--a new fundraising base.

21. I don't know if people realize this
and the option may not suit all...

I have $10 for the DNC, $15 for the DCCC, and $10 for the DSCC automatically withdrawn from my checking account every month....started that when I quit smoking last year.

22. Thanks...
Though your guy has got fundraising down to an art. I am seriously envious of Dean's fund raising. One of my main problems with him early on was that I feared he couldn't raise enough cash to run an effective campaign. So far, he's pretty much rocked!
