Kerry's Sex Appeal
Sooner or later, the GOP is going to come out with Kerry's wild partying days. Yes, he smoked pot. Yes, he dated the Old Navy chick back in the day. You might think of him as the craggiest man alive, or that already looks like he is part of Mt. Rushmore, but in his day Kerry had quite a bit of "mojo." And "mojo" is not to be underestimated.

Although the AP eventually takes them down, I've seen pictures of him playing hockey, riding his Harley, and snowboarding. And he looks good doing it. I know all of this seems kind of trite, but if Kerry gets the nod, you can be sure that these kinds of pictures are going to make it to Time and Newsweek. If he hasn't by that time, Kerry will go from aloof patrician to X-Treme POTUS (brought to you by Mountain Dew TM).

Let me give you a look at Kerry's strange dude-ness as it progressed from Rushmore/Dead Poets geek to Senatorial chic, all faster than you can say An Officer and a Gentleman:

1. He's getting better with age.

2. His wife sure looks happy.
I like when couples look happy with each other. Al and Tipper had that same undeniable attraction when they were together.

3. agreed--the double-chin actually helps him
I'm female, 32, have a Sign. Other.

I don't really find him sexy. To me he's too tall, too thin, chin too long. Just to be honest.

(I find his stance on the issues to be really sexy, though)

16. Yes it is
When the Boston Globe reporters started compiling that series on Kerry they asked the JFK Library to check their collections for any possible photographs showing the young Kerry with President Kennedy. John Kerry himself thought that "there was a picture" somewhere. In the end they found several photos which were published by the Globe.

26. Like a Fine Wine, Not Musty Cheese
I'm not sure if people ever put those 3 words together - Kerry's Sex Appeal, and I giggled the whole time putting it together. He was definitely a dork growing up. He actually helped form a Dead Poets Society in prep school, only a different name, of course (not Skull and Bones). He cites Pablo Neruda's poetry as his favorite literature, although he can apparently shoot off T.S. Eliot at the drop of a hat - in big chunks! Something about him reminds me of Ralph Fiennes in Quiz Show - a fantasy of New England monied intelligentsia that I have a hard time shaking off.

Despite his daredevil persona, there is something about the reserved smarty-pants that will always remain that prep-school dork (it probably didn't helped that he was bounced around prep-schools his whole childhood). Case in point:

<>

He took up guitar late in life just for the hell of it. He's even jammed with James Taylor, and is buddies with Carole King and some other folk-rock luminaries. But I'm convinced he needs to break out this guitar with The Boss and play Born in the USA. It would be all over after that. I can't even think about it. He should at least play Stairway to Heaven or something! Nothing smells of cheap populism like playing some of that old time rock n roll. Bush could wear all the jeans in Crawford, but a duet like that would blow everyone away. Where's my phone? I'm calling Bruce right now.

32. I Just Had A College Flashback!
I remember seeing a poster for a Christian rock band that said "Jam with the Lamb." I'm not making that up!

Suddenly I'm getting pictures of you and Kerry up on stage playing extended Allman Brothers' jams. How often do you imagine Kerry trading licks on "Whipping Post"? Hopefully not very often.

Semiotic note: I have no idea what you look like, and yet the song remains the same...

Non-semiotic note: You probably hate hippie rock. It's not my first choice, personally, but I tell ya - the Allman Brothers kicked ass at the Horde Festival. I'm sure Kerry would have too, if he was there.

9. Yes, he's handsome
Not entirely my type, but some of those pictures especially when he was younger are nice.

<nothing to do with his looks> He'd make a great president. He's one that I will work hard for if Dean doesn't get the nomination. Bumperstikers on the car, GOTV, door to door, fundraising, whatever. The others I would probably work for but not with as much enthusiasm. Dean's my #1, but I could get excited about a Kerry presidency as well.

(Just the thought of a non-Bush presidency sends me into a swoon, actually...)

14. I'm not seeing it
Sexy is the last thing I think of when I look at John Kerry...he reminds me of Jay Leno only thinner. Fortunately for Kerry, his voice isn't nearly as annoying as Leno's though. I think it's odd that his hair hasn't changed all that much over the decades.

I was watching Wesley Clark the other day and there was just something about his eyes that screamed sexy to me. I don't notice it when I see a photo of him, but if I watch him on an interview, I certainly don't feel the need to change the channel right away.

Jay Leno only thinner is a perfect description of Kerry.

And Clark is ONE FINE LOOKING MAN!!! :)

Of the announced male candidates, IMHO only Edwards would meet most people's "good looking" description.

19. John Kerry - Wild Thing
From Joe Klein profile in The New Yorker:

"I knew how to have a lot of fun, sometimes too much. There were plenty of times when I was disengaged, frivolous, four sheets to the wind on a weekend." (Kerry has admitted to smoking marijuana a few times, but, sadly, he claims to have been bothered by the smoke.)

"We did do some wild things together-flying planes, running with the bulls in Pamplona," (long-time friend David) Thorne recalls. "He was very gutsy, always pushing-let's do this, let's do that." Kerry's physical daring-as a skier, a windsurfer, a motorcycle rider, a stunt pilot-remains a source of wonder among his friends. He was, apparently, something of a cowboy in Vietnam as well. His old crewmates remember that he played rock music over the boat's loudspeaker system-the Doors, the Stones, Jimi Hendrix-before they went on patrol. "He starred in that Marlon Brando movie, 'Apocalypse Now,' long before they ever made it," Gene Thorson, a former crewmate, says.

To release the tension after a trip up the river, Kerry would often instigate chicken races between the swift boats, cutting over each other's wakes. He also organized water-balloon battles. Once, his three-boat squadron attacked an American supply ship at night with flares. "The brass was not too happy about that," Kerry recalled. "But what were they going to do to us, send us to Vietnam?"

29. Kerry may have issues
But his looks, his persona, his intellect, his charm, his “Presidential” look will NOT hinder him. Kerry is vastly more articulate and more “put together” than Chimp.

Kerry damn near has it all. I also think his wife would be a great first lady. I feel she will be a bit more like Eleanor Roosevelt in that she’ll take the lead on some issues and use her voice and her position to bring light to a cause.

Kerry/Edwards 2004 is my dream ticket at this point. However, it would be 2 Senators off the docket which doesn’t do well with our numbers especially with the impending retirement of Hollings in South Carolina who will be the last Democrat elected in that state at the Senate level for the foreseeable future.

36. The Esquire picture of he and Teresa, VERY cool.
Edited on Sun Aug-03-03 12:24 PM by tjdee
I don't find Kerry physically attractive although he has great eyes...that seem to get lost in the hair and the nose and the chin...(if I knew him, perhaps I'd be charmed, he is tall and thin, after all) and the motorcycle seems so forced to me (I know it isn't)--but he looked awfully swank and hip in the recent Esquire picture, on the phone (?) with Teresa on his knee. It was a really good picture...I'd even say a bit sexy. It was my fave of all the candidates' shots. I just couldn't bring myself to purchase a magazine with J.Lo on the cover, LOL.

You want to talk sexy, LOL, look at that first picture on the left. That guy, sitting down, with the sunglasses and the smile.... GRRRROOOWWWLLLL.
