Clark to Flesh Out Policy in Four Major Speeches
The first speech on Oct. 14 in New York City, will define Clark's view of what he calls the "new American patriotism" and specifically detail how he intends to call upon Americans to help move the country forward.

The second speech, scheduled for Oct. 20, will focus on health care, the third on Oct. 27 will be about the economy and the fourth on Nov. 4 will deal with national security. Venues have yet to be decided.

1. How does one get in to see these speeches?
Does it depend upon the venue?

4. That scares you?

It basically says that it is OK to dissent and question your government. Such action is patriotic.

But that scares you.

5. The article says nothing about what "New American Patriotism" is.

I'm always wary of political slogans that reference "patriotism."

edit- Meant to respond to #4.

8. Here is all I could find at the site on "NAP:"
"This New American Patriotism is not just about waving the flag and guarding our borders," General Clark said. "It's about guarding what makes us distinctive as Americans - our personal liberties, our right to debate and dissent. We are not a country that manipulates facts, ignores debate, and stifles dissent."

Is there policy behind the platitudes?

If that's as deep as Clark gets....

9. That's not as deep as Clark gets and
I admire the need for policy specifics, but you do realize that a political message and theme isn't about specifics...that's why it's a theme. The specifics will come under that framework.

Here's two ideas that you'll probably hear more about in the future.

I think somebody said he'll be rolling it all out in the next three weeks in planned speeches.

For some evidence of deepness, here's one interview he gave. It's not policy specifics, but it lets you know where is head is on some things.

10. Got anything from the horse's mouth?
Two TNR opinion pieces aren't very comforting. The TPM interivew, which I caught when he posted it, sounds pretty good. I'm looking beyond sound for substance. Understand where I'm coming from? I'm open, just waiting for specifics.

Then go to the video archives at www.cspan.org and watch Clark's appearance at the DNC meeting and town hall meetings.

Don't forget to watch the debate tonite. :bounce:

7. Take the word back
Democrats keep letting the right define words in a way that slams the left. The only way to stop that from happening is for our party to take the words back. It's important and I'm glad to see Clark is joining Kerry in doing that.

14. This could be a real opportunity for us and Clark...
Edited on Thu Oct-09-03 03:36 PM by burr
or a real failure.

He could use his speech on the 14th to talk about how we are all needed in the new movement to convert our nation into a democracy, like starting a local effort to generate support for necessary changes in the constitution. On the 20th he can become an advocate of a plan which would provide the same kind of tax credits that the Gephardt plan would, requiring community rated primiums so that any person regardless of their medical condition can afford it, and open the federal workers' health plan up to any who are uninsured and seek to buy in at a group rate. On the 27th he can describe the importance of repealing all shrub's taxcuts in order to provide funding..not just T-bonds for security and education, which would stimulate our slugworm economy. Finally he can describe how shrub's incompetence led to 9/11, and what he would do to rebuild bridges between our nation and countries like Syria and Iran..who we have antagonized for far too long!

The choice is his..and we as primary voters are the judges, jury, and executioner. Choose carefully..for our sake and your's General Clark.
