AK: Knowles raises $475,129.87 in first quarter
By Associated Press

ANCHORAGE

Former Gov. Tony Knowles raised $475,129.87 in the first quarter in his campaign to unseat U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski in the 2004 election, Knowles' spokesman said Friday.

The information will be included in a report to be filed next week with the Federal Election Commission, said Bob King, Knowles' spokesman. Candidates must file their campaign finance reports by Wednesday.

Of the total amount, $387,000 came from individual donors, with 73 percent of those Alaskans. Most of them gave campaign contributions of $100 or less.

1. Good
He will need every cent if he wants national money coming in from the DSCC. He needs to fundraise well if he is to get support from the DSCC.

Anyway what I am intereted in is if ANWR will hurt him.

2. I don't see how
IIRC, Knowles supports ANWR drilling.

3. Yeah but
also it is an issue where the national party is at odds with Knowles.

4. He is currently using ANWR to his advanatge
By saying has a dem he can covnince other Dems to support it. Murkowski admittedly used that as an opening and offered him a desk and a phone in her office so he could start convincing Dems right away. But she prob should have saved that line for later, since by the time the election comes along it will be either forgotten or overused and will sound stale.

5. It will have become cliched by the time Election 2004 comes around
The individual donor thing sounded really good to me. Alaska is a very small state, and if he's already attracting all of those individual donors, we should have a fairly strong built-in base for Knowles to win in 2004.
