"George Bush is taking this country in to a radically wrong direction"
Local independent voter Jane Sutherland believes the 2004 presidential election is like no other; the survival of democracy depends on the outcome of the race.

Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry agrees.

"This is not a normal election," Kerry said, looking over a standing-room-only crowd at Jack Quigley’s Bar on State Street, where Sutherland quietly sat to listen.

"George Bush is taking this country in to a radically wrong direction," Kerry, a fourth-term Massachusetts senator, repeated.

<snip>

But beyond all those issues, Kerry said he wants to restore the sense of fairness in America and correct its relations with the rest of the world.

And that’s what many voters are looking for from the Democrats — according to those who followed Kerry’s campaign trail Friday trying to decide which presidential hopeful is the most qualified.

"We are the home of the United Nations after all," said Pat Yosha of Exeter, but the U.S. is not being "a cooperative member on an equal basis" with other countries. "We are pat of the world in which we need work with other nations."

Dover Middle School teacher Eileen Flockhart is also concerned America has lost its leadership in the world community.

"We can’t be arrogant anymore — and ignorant," she said.

She has been looking for a candidate who can inspire the entire nation to take action and try to make the country a better place, she said.
