Another look at how well Dean is doing (and we got Leonard Nimoy!)
Edited on Thu Oct-16-03 11:25 AM by ProfessorPlum

http://www.cnn.com/2003/ALLPOLITICS/10/16/mgrind.day.money/index.html

<snip>
The only big surprise was that although the former Vermont governor led the Democratic field in spending for both the quarter and the campaign to date, he has one of the lowest so-called "burn rates" (the ratio of money spent to money raised), second only to Wesley
Clark, who after only two weeks in the race didn't really get much of a chance to do any quality campaign shopping.

The news will also be a pleasant surprise for Dean campaign manager Joe Trippi, who devoted a good portion of an hour-long conference call on Wednesday to explaining why their burn rate would likely be higher than the other candidates.

.....

Howard Dean

Country singer Emmylou Harris, $500; Carly Simon, $1,500; Eagles singer Glenn Frey, $2,000; Billy Baldwin, $1000; Jim Belushi, $500; Morgan Fairchild, $250; "Star Trek" star Leonard Nimoy, $2,000; Robin Williams, $2,000; comedian Janeane Garofalo, $600; Helen Hunt, $2,000; Rene Russo, $2,000; Glenn Close, $1,000.

</snip>

All I can conclude is that supporting Howard Dean is highly logical.

3. FEC filing taller than candidate. That is funny.
I saw this paragraph and wondered.
" One of Clark's few expenditures from his two weeks as a candidate was $18,000 for e-mail lists from the two "Draft Clark" committees..."
Why would he have to pay the committees who drafted him for the lists? Wouldn't they just give them to him?

4. I Thought You Had Given Up On DU
This place is a zoo! And it's only October!!

As you can see, the Kerry, Clark, and Dean people have all escalated the tensions into open hostility. Which is kind of funny considering that the candidates really aren't that different.

My Grandfather told me never get into an argument about politics or religion. I really ought to listen to him more often.

As a side note, can you include some text with a new thread? I think there might actually be a rule for that now.

Keep up the good fight, avoid the madness!

11. Looks more like a teeny tiny sword fight
Hi Doc!

Yeah, I went on a vacation, nearly sorta got myself killed, and found I kind of enjoyed not hearing about how much all of our candidates suck all the time. Been mostly lurking in GD for a while, not much stomach for P&C. But this article was so sunny I had to share.

I really wish we would stop eating our own young. Bush is going to be out on his ass soon, if we can just not blow it. We have an embarrasment of riches in our good candidates. (I was surprised Graham dropped out - his reason, "there was no way we were going to win" makes me love him even more. )

Clark, Kerry, Dean, and even Edwards could hand that boy his walking papers. All that's left is to watch the Republican's flop sweat as they lurch towards ouster.

Why all the rancor?

Good to hear from you, too!

15. Funny, Because I Can't Handle GD!
It goes too fast, and my need to address every BS about Kerry ends up whipping me into a frenzy. I said something really nasty and personal that I apologized profusely for. After about 40 posts in 30 minutes, you sort of lose perspective.

Honestly, although Dean can be irritating at times, I tend be really responding to the negativity of too many of his supporters. Who are responding to the negativity of Kerry people, who are responding to...

It's all pretty silly.

I haven't been around DU nearly as much, though. I am working on something extremely positive for Kerry (a strong point is made not to attack the other candidates), which remains under wraps for now (please no giving it away!). I am very proud of what I'm doing, and I've really been busting my ass.

We should make a point of changing the tone of the board. Think it'd work?

17. like trying to sip from a firehose
GD does go pretty fast. I avoid the candidate threads there, as well, as I don't find them nearly as enlightening as here.

I think you are right - the candidates aren't nearly as annoying as the people "supporting" them.

As far as changing the tone of this board, I would love to, but I doubt any of us, even a large group, could do it. It takes such a small number of people to really bring it down, and I can think of three such people off the top of my head who have shown no signs of ever changing their behavior. One of them in particular is not interested in "discussion" where ideas are exchanged - just argument ("Sorry, this is abuse!"). He'd argue till he was blue in the face if you said the sky was blue.

I do get a kick out of the civilized and well informed posters, here, though. There really are quite a lot of them like that, if you look at it. It's just the morans leave a more lasting impression some days.

I wish you luck on your project. I'm trying to do more for Dean - have some letters to the editor cooking, along with some other things, but work is heating up and I have to teach a college course soon and I may just have to let politics take care of itself for a little while.

Glad to know there are still good folks here, like you and dsc and RiF and LuminousX, etc. Too many to name.

Actually, I visit DU frequently...work, family, volunteer stuff haven't allowed me much time to participate in the slugfest here anymore.

Not that I'm missing it.

:hi:

PS: Oh yeah, and that head-on collision I had a couple weeks ago, that was a BIG reason why I stopped entering the ring here so much...after that, I must say I've had my fill of clashes for a while.
