OREGON CONGRESSMAN LIKELY TO MAKE MAYOR RUN
http://www.politics1.com

Congressman Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) looks likely to give up his House seat next year in order to run for Mayor of Portland. Incumbent Mayor Vera Katz -- who defeated Blumenauer for the job in 1992 when Blumenauer was then a city commissioner -- announced last week she would not seek re-election next year. The Congressman -- who was already considering a 2004 challenge to Katz -- said Katz's announcement will not speed up his plans to announce a decision on the race in September. He already has nearly $400,000 in his campaign account -- money he reportedly could tranfer to a mayoral race. Meanwhile, at least five Democratic elected officials are already looking at making a run for Blumenauer's House seat if it comes open. Even if Blumenauer gives up his safe Congressional seat, the district will remain one of the safest Democratic seats in the nation.

1. I have been writing to Earl for months about this......
telling him to NOT give up a seat in Congress that he is a shoe in for........

The candidates.......well, I wouldn't say they are GREAT!

Kate Brown (D) - State Sen. -- need to look at her more closely before I make a judgment. My gut feeling from what I recall is NO!

Margaret Carter (D) - State Sen. -- a firey empowered good black woman -- really works for the community. DOES NOT have support throughout the district -- has taken a lot of heat from all sides questioning her effectiveness. I think she would be good and I would

Serena Cruz (D) - Multnomah County Commissioner - the most imbecilic opportunistic dumbhead in Portland! RUNS for every friggin election there is! She worships power! I was not at all surprised to see her sitting up on the stage when Howard Dean came. She was up there with SOS Bill Bradbury and our wonderful and beloved former gov, Barbara Roberts. I was thinking......who put that orange in with the apples? Serena.....I wish she would GO AWAY!

Lisa Naito (D) - Multnomah County Commissioner -- ?? She's pretty good, I wouldn't put her on a national level. She is from a powerful family here in Portland, The Naitos.....they own A LOT of commercial real estate. And from the lawsuits they seem to file against each other...it isn't a very nice family! Lisa? She's done a pretty good job.

Steve Novick (D) - Attorney - need to look him up. AN ATTORNEY........oh GREAT!

Rod Park (D) - Portland Metro Councilor.........???????

The sick thing about this is EARL most likely can't win the mayoral bid against Francesconi, IMO. So, Earl will give up his house seat AND not really change things. I am very mad at Earl right now! We didn't put him in Congress so he could give up his seniority to become a silly mayor.......arrghhhhhhh

3. exactly
I am for Francesconi, because I think Earl is doing a fantastic
job as a congressman.
I personally have the great David Wu as my congressman!!!!!
Which I have written to several times, and he has written back.

2. And this ATTITUDE really grinds on my nerves......
"Even if Blumenauer gives up his safe Congressional seat, the district will remain one of the safest Democratic seats in the nation."

Yeah folks.........it's okay, we will win, no problem......nothing to worry about. I am sick of Oregon politicians ASSUMING that Portland is a stronghold for dem votes. That's bullcorn. Oregon BARELY elected a dem governor, BARELY. Until the end of the vote count, the pro-life zealot Mannix was WINNING this state. Portland pushed it back to the dems.

Our dem senator, Wyden, totally takes us for granted.

God, we have all really spoiled our dems, haven't we? They don't even have to vote the platform and they still think.....my seat in Congress is safe.......

5. you're talking about statewide races
the Portland district is liberal as hell. Gore carried it by almost 30 points. I don't see how any Republican could win there.

4. As a C-SPAN watcher, this makes me sad...

Blumenauer is always good to watch...plus he's one of the few people with bow ties that doesn't make me :puke:.

And having an open seat to deal with doesn't help, either...I know it's a very Democratic seat, but we're still going to have to spend more money then if Blumenauer runs for re-election.

ON EDIT: I don't know much about his Portland mayoral chances, so I'll defer to you guys on that.
