I also think they should get Gephart to sponsor one in the House! Since they are such true believers in the horror that the CFB represents, why not put their money where their mouths are?

Comments?

1. I'm probably being an idiot, but what does the "B" stand for in CFB?
I figure C = confederate and F = flag, but I can't figure out "B".

3. Hmm....
I would have thought all of their supporters would have just JUMPED at the chance to say why it is so important that they be at the forefront on this monumentally important issue. Strangely, I hear silence...

5. Of Course Not
They only care because this was a possibility to be a silver bullet against Dean.

It isn't. They won't take any substantive action against the Confederate battle standard because they know doing so is fundamentally wrong. We can deride flying it, boycott states that keep it on public display, but the removal of it has to be voluntary. That is the negative aspect of Liberty. We have to give the Klan the right to gather. We can't do anything about people flying the swastika and we can't do anything about Rush Limbaugh's hate speech.

6. History has a solution
Edited on Sun Nov-02-03 05:49 PM by ayeshahaqqiqa
The Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia, commonly known as "the Confederate Flag" was NEVER the official banner of the breakaway southern states. It was, however, used by Nathan Bedford Forrest and others AFTER the war to spread terror via their nightrider organizations, including the KKK.

All the brouhaha about flying this flag for 'historical reasons' by states and municipalities is mere bunk. To fly the Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia is to show that either you don't know history or you support the racist tradition this rag represents.

I have no problem allowing the displaying of the Stars and Bars, the Bonnie Blue Flag, or even the Stainless Banner (which had the BFNV in the canton), because they WERE official banners of the Confederacy. But you rarely find any of the people agitating for display who want to fly these flags, which has got to make you wonder a bit.

All that said, I will state that I see a lot of people with the 'Rebel Flag' on their license plates. Don't know that that has the same impact as a state insisting it be flown over their state capitol-and it IS protected by free speech.

(btw, all my ancestors wore Union Blue, and I still whistle Union songs whenever I go by any Confederate monument here in the South)

8. So why not outlaw it?
Since it's such a vital issue? Perhaps they don't have the courage of their convictions? Maybe they're just opportunistic cheap-shot artists whose campaigns are floundering, and saw a chance for a soundbite?

12. And by the way...
Edited on Sun Nov-02-03 06:11 PM by Padraig18
... give your man a big 'Atta Boy!' for standing shoulder-to-shoulder with a brave, Democratic senator like Dick Durbin (who has the courage of his convictions) in opposing the IWR. I know it meant a lot to Sen. Durbin, who was running for re-election at the time.

Thanks, Johnny! :eyes:

On edit: Illinois is *not* gonna be 'Kerry country', so i wouldn't waste much money here-- the state party despises him, Edwards and Lieberman.

11. So you agree, people have the right to display that flag
no matter how vile it is. Is it stupid to ignore those people who have this vile object attached to their trucks?
