GOP campaign ads question patriotism
GOP campaign ads that question the patriotism of anyone who doubts President Bush's judgment on the war in Iraq show a lack of understanding of what democracy is all about.

The ads, shown in Iowa and perhaps set for other states' early presidential primaries, say "Some are now attacking the President for attacking the terrorists" and "Some call for retreat, putting our national security in the hands of others."

The message from the White House in unmistakable. Go along with Bush or you're soft on terrorism -- even unpatriotic.

<snip>

But casting ugly implications about the devotion of those who disagree -- especially those such as Wesley Clark and John Kerry, both decorated Vietnam veterans wounded in combat -- is beneath any American.

It also is a major misstep by a president of the United States, who claims to "love" free speech and dissent.

3. Just let the people know that these same "patriots"
voted to cut benefits to disabled vets and to the military. Remind them that while cutting taxes for the rich, Bush made it so that firemen and emergency workers, who are on the front lines of homeland defense, have less money to do their work.

If we are truthful and stand our ground, they cannot win.

4. Veterans
When you fight a war, there is one lesson you don't forget: you never, ever leave a soldier behind. For three years now, President Bush has been leaving our soldiers and veterans behind. The ingratitude he has shown our veterans is appalling. His misguided policies would lead to the closure of schools on military bases, and the loss of 6,000 beds in VA hospitals - just as 235,000 veterans sit on waiting lists for VA care. And 20 percent of America's National Guard and Reserve members have no health insurance at all when they're not on active duty; those who do have insurance struggle with rising costs.

Health care isn't the only basic need that President Bush has left unmet. There are 250,000 veterans sleeping on the street each night in America. America's homeless veterans not only deserve support from the country they have served-they deserve dignity.
