Dean's amazing money machine in high gear
WASHINGTON - When Howard Dean announced a year ago that he would match President Bush's $200 million war chest by getting $100 from 2 million supporters, it seemed like a sweet but silly dream. No one's laughing anymore.

Dean's "$100 dollar revolution" has built him a $25 million war chest and propelled him from long shot to the front of the Democratic pack. Campaign manager Joe Trippi is confident the $200 million goal will be met next summer.

"There are millions of people that are for us right now," he said. "We're positive we get to 2 million as people become convinced it's us versus Bush."

Except for retired Gen. Wesley Clark, all of Dean's Democratic rivals, even the Rev. Al Sharpton, get most of their money from the kind of supporter who can write a check for the maximum $2,000. Dean's average donation is just $77.
