WASHINGTON — Howard Dean clearly has momentum among the Democratic presidential contenders and would win the Tennessee primary if it were held today, Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen said yesterday.
Bredesen said he believes the former Vermont governor has an advantage ''among regular Democrats that would vote in a primary'' over the other eight candidates vying to take on President Bush in 2004. The Tennessee primary is Feb. 10, a week after Arizona and four other states go to the polls and two states hold caucuses.
Dean's edge in Tennessee probably got a boost Tuesday, Bredesen said, when former Vice President Al Gore endorsed the New Englander's campaign. Bredesen said that while Gore's announcement surprised him, ''surprise does not mean dismay.''
Bredesen said he thought Gore would support Sen. Joe Lieberman, D-Conn., Gore's running mate in the 2000 presidential campaign.
