CNN strangeness today
Even though I only listened to CNN intermittently while working, I noticed one strange thing that seemed to run through the political coverage today.

The stats that CNN kept citing were between Gore and Bush from the last election. What? When talking about the “batleground” states, CNN would throw up results from the last election. Why would they do that? Why wouldn’t they just “report” the latest polls from those states?

CNN said that Gore won this one and Bush won that one, blah, blah, blah as an apparent attempt to create and flog the horse-race scenario that the talking heads luv sooo much.

If there really is a “horse-race,” why would CNN need to rely on results from the last election? Is CNN so desperate to prop up Bush that they have been reduced to any means possible? Why else would they report the current contest in 4 year old terms?

Maybe I got it wrong, but it sure seemed strange to me.

1. Perhaps so as not to "influence" the election?
I know it sounds kind of weird, but I have been wondering if the 50/50 stuff isn't being played up so they can be innocent of charges saying "you told everyone it was all over months ago." Of course, both sides are completely convinced the media is out to get them...:) Ida

2. Innocent of charges -- you bet
Remember VNS? Voter News Service was a polling company financed by the news networks that conducted exit polls. They correctly predicted Gore won Florida.

When Bush stole the election, VNS was smeared and slandered. They were even the subject of a Congressional hearing where the Repukes were all-a-twitter about their horrendous failures. The networks ended VNS because of this pressure.

More likely, CNN (and all the others) are doing everything possible to say the race is 50/50 so when Bush steals the election again, they won’t be called before Congress, publicly humiliated and disbanded.

3. Exit Polls
I think that we should once again allow the so-called "exit polls." Yes, those polls were a meager way of keeping track of potential shenanigans -- now that we have the hindsight to realize that.

But they worked!

Given the rush to install Republican governors throughout the country (some by coup), we really must keep an eye on what is going on -- state by state.

How will we convince eligible voters who don't complete their duty as an American citizen when their complaint that "My vote doesn't count!" might be quite valid?

We in the US don't live in a democracy. Seems that we never really did.

But that doesn't mean that we should give up on working toward democracy.
