AAR affiliate and rumor update thread
Edited on Sat Sep-25-04 11:04 AM by RatTerrier
I thought I'd post this thread here to keep track of the current affilliates of Air America and liberal radio in general, and to keep track of rumored flips as well.

I've been posting a lot of this in the state forums, and may continue to do so, but I'll post most of what I dig up here. I read a few of the radio trade magazines and some radio message boards, so I'll keep all of you up to date here.

Here's the current AAR list:

Anchorage, AK - KUDO 1080 AM
Albuquerque, NM - KABQ 1350 AM
Ann Arbor, MI - WLBY 1290 AM
Asheville, NC - WPEK 880 AM
Atlanta, GA - WWAA 1690 AM
Chapel Hill, NC - WCHL 1360 AM
Columbus, OH - WTPG 1230 AM
Denver, CO - KKZN 760 AM
Honolulu, HI - KUMU 1500 AM
Kauai, HI - KQNG 570 AM
Key West, FL - WKIZ 1500 AM
Madison, WI - WXXM 92.1 FM (WTDY-1670 is a non-AAR station with mostly liberal talk)
Maui, HI - KAOI 1110 AM
Miami, FL - WINZ 940 AM
Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN - 1530 AM/740 AM (moves to 950 on 10/1, will drop 740)
New York City - WLIB 1190 AM
Northampton, MA - WHMP 1400 AM
Petoskey, MI - WWKK 750 AM
Philadelphia, PA - WHAT 1340 AM
Phoenix, AZ - KXXT 1010 AM
Plattsburgh/Burlington - WTWK 1070 AM
Portland, ME - WLVP 870 AM (will flip to sports following the election)
Portland, OR - KPOJ 620 AM
Reno/Carson City, NV: 590 KTHO
Riverside, CA - KCAA 1050 AM
Rochester, NY - WROC 950 AM
Sacramento, CA - KSQR 1240 AM
Santa Barbara, CA - KTLK 1340 AM
San Diego, CA - 1360 AM KLSD
San Luis Obispo, CA: 1340 KYNS
West Palm Beach, FL - WJNO 1290 AM

XM Satellite Radio - ch. 167
Sirius Satellite Radio - ch. 144

Coming soon (all but confirmed)

Boston: WXKS 1430 AM
Framingham, MA: WKOX 1200 AM

This week:

** Clear Channel (CC) announced they will roll out the format in two Top 25 markets in the coming weeks. San Francisco and Los Angeles are the two most rumored.

** Minneapolis/St. Paul - Moves to 950 AM on 10/1. Will keep 1530, drop 740. They list some AAR shows on their site, but intend to keep some of 950's shows, such as Ruth Kosczelak. Really dumb idea, but it probably has to do with contracts. They plan on fulfilling the sports play-by-play contracts 950 currently has.

** Portland, ME - WLVP 870 AM will drop AAR and flip to sports following the election.

Strong Rumors:

Dish Network
Los Angeles: 1150 KXTA may flip very soon.
San Francisco: KABL 960 AM will flip Tuesday 9/28. AAR most obvious format.
Houston: 790 KBME is listed on Randi Rhodes' archive site, and has been rumored.

Dead rumors:

Boulder, CO: KBAC 610 AM (A station in Denver picked it up)
Colorado Springs, CO: KBZC 1300 AM (flipped to sports)
Memphis, TN: WMQM 1600 AM (nothing new here)
Nashua, NH: WSNH 900 AM (nothing new here)
Santa Fe, NM: KOOT 101.5 FM (this may be a new frequency. AAR is on in Albuquerque)
Milwaukee, WI: 97.1 WLTQ (This was a ruse last weekend. Changed format to 80's rock, but teased at AAR. Stay tuned here!)

Other places and speculation:

Chicago (nothing new here, but CC's 1690 is an obvious choice)
Cincinnati (WSAI-1530 is rumored on the radio boards. Ratings are decent, though, so I wouldn't count on it.)
Cleveland/Akron (so many candidates, but nothing even in rumor stages)
Dallas (nothing)
Indianapolis (nothing)
Iowa (nothing)
Kansas City (nothing, but KCKN sounds like an obvious choice)
Pittsburgh (nothing)
San Antonio/Austin (CC likes the idea of AAR in the Austin market, but has no signals to put it on)
Seattle (all speculation now, but KPOJ is upgrading it's power, and could reach as far as Seattle with some static)
St. Louis (nothing)
Washington/Baltimore (no rumors at all, but who knows?)

1. Further Chicago Rumors
Apparently there is a gentleman who made a fortune running and then selling an independent television station who has been quietly buying several smaller AM stations (I can't remember his name, forgive me). He's a Democratic activist, however, and the rumor in the Chicago TRIBUNE a while ago was that AAR may be put on several of these outlets so the entire metro Chicago area can be covered. FWIW.

2. That's Fred Eychaner
Edited on Sat Sep-25-04 11:19 AM by RatTerrier
And he owns a few low-powered rimshot FMs and daytime AM stations. This is a possibility, especially since he just bought a few Spanish-formatted stations that aren't doing anything ratings-wise. But he has no plans to bring in AAR at this time. But it is a possibility.

He currently owns:

WDEK-FM 92.5 Dekalb
WKIE-FM 92.7 Arlington Heights
WKIF-FM 92.5 Kankakee
WRZA-FM 99.9 (not a possibility - just flipped)
WNDZ-AM 750 (small daytime station)

The '92' stations were just purchased from a Spanish-language broadcaster, and could be possibilities. 750 is just languishing now, but is hindered by a poor daytime-only signal.

As you said, he's a big time Dem activist and contributor. Here's a profile of him:

4. You are correct
Just poked around and found this:

http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2004/09/25/BUGF68UNJ31.DTL

Comedian Al Franken is bringing his ambitious attempt to create a liberal talk radio network to the Bay Area's airwaves starting Tuesday.

Air America, which got off to a rocky beginning after its start in April, will take over the slot now occupied by KABL on 960 AM. The new station will be called KQKE, "the Quake." KABL, which plays American standards from the 1940s and 1950s, will move to 92.1 FM, broadcasting out of Walnut Creek.

Clear Channel Communications, which owns KABL, hopes to turn the Sinatra- oriented station into a broader network, starting with 92.1 and a station in Monterey, according to KABL General Manager Joe Cunningham.

7. More of Eychaner's stations
Edited on Sun Sep-26-04 09:00 AM by RatTerrier
He may have sold some of these. 820 may have been sold to Starboard.

WNDZ-AM (750) - Daytime-only statio out of NE Indiana
WCSN-AM (820) - Great signal, daytime-only. I think he still owns it.
WAIT-AM (850) - NW suburbs. Daytime only
WSBC-AM (1240) - This is an odd one. It shares time with two other stations.
WCFJ-AM (1470) - 24 hour signal. South side. Barely reaches downtown.

I've also read posts on other boards talking about WSCR (670), which is owned by Infinity. This will never happen. WSCR makes a ton of money doing sports talk, and they just signed Mike North to a huge contract. No way they ever blow this thing up. Especially for Air America. Same goes for it's rival, WMVP (1000). Disney likes their flagship stations, and this one carries their ESPN programming.

This could be interesting. If CC gets wind of Eychaner flipping any of his stations, they could likely get a jumpstart and flip 1690. I doubt CC wants to lose liberal talk to a tiny low-powered signal in Chicago. And the "Real Oldies" format never really caught on.

6. WPTT-1360 would be a great choice for Pittsburgh
They already have the only liberal talk show in Pittsburgh, and they're going to have a hole in the schedule when Billo Reilly moves to KDKA.

10. Thank Infinity Broadcasting for that
Edited on Sun Sep-26-04 11:58 AM by RatTerrier
We all know O'Really gets lousy ratings in every market he's in. He started his show last year around the time of Rush's drug problems, circling Rush's expected meltdown like a buzzard. A year later, Rush is still there, and O'Really is stuck mostly on third and fourth-tier talkers. His syndicators paid stations in the big markets (LA and NY) to carry his show. His show is terrible - he doesn't put a lot of effort into it. Just an extension of his TV show.

His show is syndicated by Westwood One, which is owned by CBS/Viacom. Viacom owns Infinity Broadcasting, which owns KDKA. KDKA currently carries Rush's show, as it has for a long time. But Rush is syndicated by Premiere, the syndication arm of Clear Channel. Clear Channel has been making an effort to pry Rush away from their competitors in a few markets and putting him on their own stations. Now, CC has a talk station (bypassing the remaining lower-powered available AM stations for a big FM signal). Rush is going to the new 104.7 in the next few months, and KDKA will push O'Really to fill the void on their big signalled heritage AM station, swiping it away from the smaller station. I guess Infinity is trying to push this show as much as they can.

Well, at least it keeps all the crappy RW hosts ghettoized on their own signals. I notice that there are a lot of stations in and around the Pittsburgh area, and I wonder what the reach and listenership is of them. Wonder who's gonna take the chance at AAR? It's gotta be a win-win format for a lot of these tiny stations. AAR's programming is basically free to affiliates (barter, which is the most popular method of syndication). Result? A strong product with little overhead. Just promote it and sell advertising time on it.

8. Washington DC rumors
Al Franken hinted at AAR coming to DC:

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2004/9/22/22485/3728

This site thinks it may be WWRC (1260 AM), a Clear Channel station:

http://dcrtv.com/

Lefty Talk For 1260? - 9/23 - Apparently, Al Franken said on his Air America show yesterday that he expects the lefty political network to be on in DC "soon." Clear Channel has already flipped at least 10 of its stations to "progressive talk." Will its WWRC (1260 AM) be next? In the latest ratings, sports talk-formatted WWRC pulled an anemic 0.1 share. Hmmm.....

Clear Channel also owns:

WTNT-AM (570) - RW talk. Crummy ratings.
WTEM-AM (980) - Dominant sports station in town.
WFRE (99.9) - Poorly rated country station. They also have another country station in the market.

CC is always the best bet to put AAR in a market, since they are so gung-ho over the format. But there are a lot of faltering AM stations here, so I'm shocked none of them picked up the format yet. WWRC seems like an obvious choice. The station barely gets any ratings, and the only use it has to CC is that it picks up CC's syndicated sports programming (they handle FOX Sports radio and Jim Rome). Other than that, it's a tree falling in the forest with nobody there to hear it. It cracked a 0.1 share in the ratings for the first time in almost a year. That's pretty bad, especially for a 24 hour AM that seems to cover most of the DC area (signal gets weak around Baltimore during the day, non-existant at night). Keep your eye on 1260.

As for 570, this is a powerful signal (for AM's, the lower a station is, the more powerful it is, and even 5000 can cover hundreds of miles). But it gets better ratings than 1260 (not great, though) and 1260 seems too much like a big gaping hole that needs to be filled. Stay tuned!

12. 960 AM in San Francisco will supposedly flip on Friday 10/1
Edited on Mon Sep-27-04 05:49 PM by RatTerrier
This is according to AAR's site and Radio And Records, an industry trade publication.

Clear Channel, the station's owners, must be figuring out logistics for moving 960 KABL's current format, which will move to 92.1 in Walnut Creek and a station in Monterey. Or it could just be legal wrangling, starting the format on the first day of the new month.

Another possibility is that they're doing it to coincide with a possible L.A. flip (1150 AM, which was rumored a month or two ago to also be around October 1). But this is mere speculation, and there's been no word at all about it since. It would kinda make sense to sign on both stations the same day, though. Nonetheless, don't hold your breath for L.A. just yet.

Friday will be a busy day for AAR. October 1 is also the day 950 AM Minneapolis picks up the programming, as the company leasing 1530 and 740 takes over the frequency. The original plan was for their programming on 740 to be dumped, and will be kept on 1530 in the western suburbs. 950 AM is a 24-hour signal that is centrally located in the metro area. It's not a monster signal, but it isn't bad. Not sure what the schedule will be like on the stations, though. The new owners have stated that they plan to keep bland talk show host Ruth K. and the current sports play-by play contracts. The Ruthie thing is probably a condition by the station's sellers, Infinity, which settled a wrongful termination suit (she was fired from their powerhouse AM talker WCCO a few years ago, and sued). Perhaps Infinity dumping the station is their way of just getting her out of their hair. That, and they get rid of a station that they really don't know what to do with. Over the past few years, 950 has been mostly a dumping ground for WCCO's leftovers (exiled hosts, sports conflicts, etc.). It's current format is a mix of business news, talk shows, and sports talk. Needless to say, it gets nothing resembling ratings success. Hence, the decision to sell it to the "Straight Talk Radio" folks.

Here's the website:

His radio show's really not half bad. And it's good that he's on in a lot of markets where AAR isn't. He's just ahead of Schultz in terms of being the most syndicated liberal on talk radio. Speaking of Schultz, do you have a list of his affiliates? He said on Franken today that he's up to 55 affiliates.

19. I'm working on a Schultz list
Edited on Tue Sep-28-04 10:00 PM by RatTerrier
Kinda tough, since there's no real list to be found anywhere.

I've found roughly 30 affiliates so far. 55 seems like a stretch, unless you count the five affiliates for his seperate North Dakota show or his North Dakota football broadcasts (yes, he calls college football games).

I'll try and post it tomorrow, if I complete the list. And I'll post an updated thread with links and new rumors about liberal radio in a few days.

And I'm shocked he was on Franken. I thought those guys couldn't stand each other. Eddie doesn't like a lot of his contemporaries, and doesn't seem to think much of AAR. But considering he's on a lot of AAR affiliates, I think he decided it would be smart to play nice.

25. Schultz vs Franken
Schultz often mentions how he started his national show on two measley stations, building the number up to 50+ now, so of course he could'nt be including the locale stations if those figures are accurate.

I think there is more hostility between Rhodes and Schultz then with Franken. After all, many think that Franken will try to run for the senate after the radio thing is over... shortly after the november elections most likely. He is not in this thing long term and is thus not in direct competition with Schultz.

20. Ed Schultz affiliates
Edited on Wed Sep-29-04 11:32 AM by RatTerrier
This is the most comprehensive list I could come up with, since Ed's official site does not have a listing of affiliates.

Clear Channel has been putting Schultz's show on many of their 'progressive talk' stations where he is available (he is carried by other stations in Ann Arbor and Madison). And it's likely Schultz will be picked up by future 'progressive talk' stations, including Entercom-owned WROC in Rochester, NY.

Interesting to note that Ed Schultz actually has two syndicated shows. The most popular one is his national show. Another one is his original, "News and Views", which originates out of KFGO in Fargo, ND and is carried by five other stations across the state. The show covers mostly North Dakota issues, and is completely seperate from his national show. None of these stations carry his national show.

Here is the listing so far. There may be a few stations left out, but it is as accurate as I could come up with:

LOCAL ONLY
Ed Schultz, with KFGO's "News and Views" is heard weekdays, 8:30-11am CST

KFGO-AM 790 Fargo, ND
KKAA-AM 1560 Aberdeen, ND
KFYR-AM 550 Bismarck, ND
KKXL-AM 1440 Grand Forks, ND
KLTC-AM 1460 Dickinson, ND
KCJB-AM 910 Minot, ND

NATIONAL (carried live 3-6 PM EST, 2-5 CST)

KUDO-AM 1080 Anchorage AK
KXXT-AM 1010 Phoenix, AZ
KTOX-AM 1340 Needles, CA
KLSD-AM 1360 San Diego, CA

Stephanie Miller

Jones Radio Networks launched The Stephanie Miller Show last week on five affiliates. This is a brand new show, and seems to be piggybacked on a few stations that currently carry Ed Schultz. Miller's show airs live weekdays (9am-12pm ET) and is the second program to join JRN's progressive talk lineup alongside Ed Schultz.

WPEK-AM 880 Asheville, NC

22. Boston
Clear Channel is supposedly going to put their 'progressive talk' format on in the Boston area on two signals:

Boston: WXKS 1430 AM
Framingham, MA: WKOX 1200 AM

WXKS is a 1000 watt station in the heart of the city, but little reach outside of it. WKOX is located in the west suburbs, and is a bit fuzzy in the city, especially at night when they reduce their power. But WKOX does plan to boost their signal to 50,000 watts and move thier signal and city of license to Newton, which will give it a good signal covering the whole market, and even as far down as Providence, RI. Perhaps CC is planning on upgrading 1200's signal so as not to blow up 1430's standards format. I have no idea when this upgrade will take place, so stay tuned. WKOX currently runs a brokered format with mostly ethnic programming.

Here is WKOX's current day and night signal reach:

And the improved signal after the upgrade:

Here's WXKS' signal:

Again, my bet is that CC will put AAR on WKOX (1200) and leave 1430 the way it is upon 1220's power boost. WXKS-1430's standards format is getting so-so ratings, but it's not an attractive format for advertisers, so they might just flip both. Boston seems like an obvious market for the 'progressive talk' format.

26. Add Albany, Oregon 990 to list
KRKT turning to talk radio

BY CATHY INGALLS
For the Gazette-Times

Starting on Monday, KRKT 990 AM will switch from its classic country music format to airing "progressive" talk show programs, according to station manager Larry Rogers.

The program personalities will counter the more conservative lineup of Rush Limbaugh, Michael Savage and Lars Larson featured on sister station KLOO 1340 AM.

KRKT's new slogan is "AM 990, The Truth," he said. The station will feature programming from Air America, which is less than a year old and originates on the East Coast.
