Subscribe to the Nation and the Progressive!
Everybody, do yourself a favor and subscribe to The Nation and The Progressive, if you don't already.

Stop supporting the mainstream "liberal" media and start supporting real, independent investigative journalism. They need your support! After a couple of months, you'll be addicted, and you'll never want anything to do with mainstream "liberal" media any more.

P.S. No, I don't work for either of these magazines. :)

2. That's great! You will love it.
I'm always amazed at what how good the articles in The Nation are. (Thank you for reading my thread, by the way.)

Right after Reagan's death, when no one in the mainstream media dared say anything the least bit critical about him, The Nation published an issue full of articles about how bad the Reagan years really had been. The cover picture was a cartoon of a person holding his nose, with Reagan's funeral in the background.

The real liberal media is there; you just have to subscribe to it.

http://www.motherjones.com/">Mother Jones magazine is also good. I've only read one issue and don't subscribe to it yet, but they're offering a year's subscription (6 issues) for $10.

3. I'd add Mother Jones for sure....the New Yorker Magazine...
And, Vanity Fair has certainly served up its share of good articles...

4. The reason I don't subscribe to the New Yorker and the Atlantic Monthly
is that their main articles are almost always written by men. Check out this site: The Talk of the Rest of the Town. This isn't the case with The Nation and The Progressive. I don't think it's 50-50 between men and women, but a large number of their main articles are written by women.

5. I advocate for women, but as long as they are reporting the truth....
I don't care what the gender is of the writer. Given that truth is in short supply right now, I just don't think we have that luxury...

6. Well, I can't subscribe to ALL the good magazines, so I will
choose the ones that don't discriminate against women. (Would you also say the same thing about a magazine that clearly discriminated against black people? Would you say it so openly and proudly, on a liberal message board? Somehow, I don't think so.)

Anyway, The Nation and The Progressive are much better magazines than The New Yorker and The Atlantic Monthly. There is a lesson here: if you want to improve the quality of your product, don't discriminate against any groups; hire based on talent, not based on race or gender.

Sorry if this sounds preachy, but I'm getting awfully tired of seeing people accept sexism "in certain cases", as if it's no big deal.

7. If you think for one minute, I haven't born the brunt of sexism......
think again..... You've got an ERA rights "veteran" here...

But I also don't condone reverse sexism as the "cure" to female inequality. I agree with prioritizing your subscriptions towards those who fulfill both quality and gender equity. But, in the end, that does not mean I would ignore the others. Right now, I'm so damned glad to see any form of media speaking the truth...I just don't feel we have the luxury to seek philosophical "purity" in a climate that is so nearly devoid of journalistic integrity as to make pravda comparisons increasingly close to the mark.

My guess is that we could impact the lack of good female writers at New Yorker and Atlantic Monthly with organized LTTE or petition campaigns. Both have already shown strenth of "conviction" in printing the exposes of Sy Hersch (New Yorker) and similar hard-hitting and risky pieces. That, to me, suggests they might also be reasonable in addressing the lack of female inclusion, if we approached them on the issue. I have not done so and don't know of any organized efforts to address the issue to date. Do you?

8. It is not reverse sexism to boycott journals that discriminate
against women. It is not reverse sexism to refuse to put up with sexism.

You seem to be misinterpreting what I wrote. I did not say that we shouldn't read these magazines. But I, personally, am not going to subscribe and give them my hard-earned money. Everyone has her own threshold -- this is mine.

This was just an observation I made, while reading the magazines. All I've heard or seen about it is the web site I've quoted. The thing to do, I guess, is to document it better, publicize it, and write letters to the editors.

11. You're making the assumption that there is a sexist policy
I'd like to see more evidence. If their writers are predominately men, and if that automatically makes their hiring policy sexist, then I'd like to look at the percentage of minorities on their payroll too. Naturally, they'll be guilty of racism, if minorities don't make up 25.2% of their payroll.

10. "The Nation" is the best.
Regular columnists Kath Pollitt, Eric Alterman, Patricia Williams are among the best political writers today. Pollitt's op-ed is one of my favorite regular reads; she's the master of the one-page op-ed piece. Contributors include William Greider, Naomi Klein, Gore Vidal, Howard Zinn, Molly Ivins, David Corn. Each issue is packed with essential commentary; the magazine has been my regular go-to source for lefty/progressive information.
