Where do I get news info, when I stop watching cable tv news? XM radio?
I can watch PBS and CSPAN, but they don't come anywhere near the 24 hour news coverage that I used to get from the cable news networks. Are there any plans to bring Air America to television?

I may even switch from our local CBS radio station, and start listening to more NPR. Unfortunately, the AirAmerica signal is too weak to pick up right now.

How about XM radio? Are the news networks the same as we get on cable tv, i.e. CNN, MSNBC etc?? Or do the old network news organizations have 24 hour news on XM? (CBS, ABC, NBC)

19. that's not true, at least not anymore
I subscribe to Sirius, and I prefer it to XM, but I think XM's connection to Clear Channel is overstated. Clear Channel's stake in XM is pretty small. There was a time when Clear Channel held 15% or more of XM's stock, but their stake in XM has fallen to less than 3%. Clear Channel has no seats on XM's board, they have no special voting rights, and they don't have any influence on XM programming. Clear Channel actually views XM as a competitor.

4. I get my news from DU and KOS. I realize that you are probably
getting it from cable but, at least you are giving the news with your delightful dose of skepticism. Also, many get news from foreign sources. What are the whore cable media companies going to do if 50% of the Americans refuse to watch? It might not matter if they are making more money from other sources of gov. payoffs.

11. This Place is a Good Start
with over 55,000 registered DUers - most of whom are dedicated newshounds - not much gets past us! I daresay every pertinent news story the world over gets a link from DU within scant minutes of its original posting.

To fill out your daily editorial requirement, visit Buzzflash or The Smirking Chimp. All the major progressive magazines - like Salon or Mother Jones - have websites posting investigative pieces on topics ranging from environmental issues to black-box voting.

I kicked the cable news habit years ago; I haven't watched CNN since before Ted Turner sold it. Even after this past election season, when I watched a couple of shows at some DUer's insistence, I'd still have trouble picking out Scarborough or Begala in a line-up. I may recognize Tucker Carlson, but not if he skipped wearing the bow tie for some reason.

I refuse to watch those shows; by ignoring them, we deny them any legitimacy. I plan to carry out this boycott one step further by identifying their sponsors and refusing to buy any of their products.

12. Thanks for all the responses, and links. and the heads up on Sirius
vs. XM.
It sure would be nice if there were ONE 24 hour news channel on TV that wasn't whoring itself to the Rush Limbaugh wolf pack.

13. Do you get Link TV and the Sundance Channel?
I've banned all mainstream news from my newshound diet. I'm strictly relying on the Internet (with DU's Latest Breaking News as my primary source) and:

Democracy Now! - on Link TV/World TV (DirecTV ch. 375, Dish ch. 9410)(also streaming online at www.democracynow.org )

Link TV/World TV has some other good programs - Mosaic is a good one.

Jon Stewart's The Daily Show - Comedy Central

Al Franken - on the Sundance Channel (DirecTV ch. 549)

Ian Master's Background Briefing - stream online at http://www.ianmasters.org /

FAIR's Counterspin - stream online at http://www.fair.org/counterspin/index.html

That's it. That's all I need!

16. DirecTV = Murdoch evilness. Get Dish Network instead.
They carry Free Speech TV in addition to the others you mentioned. They also carry a shitload of university networks. I've seen so many great lectures (Noam Chomsky, George Soros, Gore Vidal, etc.) on the university networks.

that virtually every piece of relevant or interesting news will find its way to these boards, usually sooner rather than later . . . "If it's happening, you can find it on DU!" . . . :)

20. Sirius has the BBC World Service News
which is pretty good. And Sirius also has the World Radio Network, which has news programs from around the world. I think that the BBC World Service is also on XM.

The cable news networks are on Sirius and XM, but CBS, ABC, and NBC don't have any 24-hour news programming on either satellite radio. ABC radio (on both Sirius and XM), though, does have news programming on throughout the morning, but then they go to right-wing talk in the afternoon (Sean Hannity) and evening.

21. I listened to Air America on the internet, before it came to San Diego.

But they don't carry everything all the time, so I still listen to it online a lot. I don't have cable and I don't turn my TV on unless somebody on DU says there's something worth seeing on a public channel. I can listen to C-Span online if a DUer posts an alert that something is worthwhile.

When the right wing first took over the media, what was it, almost 15 years ago, I didn't have a computer or a TV, and my little pocket radio wasn't very good. So I invested in a shortwave radio and started getting my news from Canada and Australia. Eventually I got the computer, and then I was given a TV. Don't have much use for the TV. The way I see it, no news is better than wingnut propaganda trying to pass for news.

Right now I've been doing what everybody else is doing: bombarding the media with the facts about the fraudulent election. Hey, the mass media doesn't even know they've got ELECTILE DYSFUNCTION, and we've got the cure! Sic 'em!
