L.A. Times Reporter Defends Paper’s Recall Coverage

Mark Barabak, a political writer for the Los Angeles Times, defended his paper's coverage of the recall election in a talk for a political science class.

Defending his paper's coverage of the recall election, Los Angeles Times political writer Mark Barabak spoke to about 400 students yesterday in a political science class, analyzing the election campaign, its outcome and the media's performance.

Responding to charges of slanted reporting, Barabak said the Times did its part reporting stories unfavorable to Gov. Gray Davis, and that even pro-recall advertisements used quotes from the Times.

A report recently published by Policy Analysis for California Education echoed this, finding candidate coverage by the Times more balanced than other media outlets.

While the campaign may be over, Barabak said, the story of Schwarzenegger's past is not. He said the Times is investigating potentially more damaging charges against the governor-elect.
