Just turned Randi's replacement OFF

There are people in the office, so I've had the volume really low. In fairness, I haven't heard everything he's said. But, man...he's been on a "why does that welfare queen have a Cadillac?" riff for the last hour.

He was behind someone paying for groceries with food stamps, and she had an iPhone and drove a nice car. I don't know what that person's story is. Maybe she is one of the few cheats. The host himself admitted that some people trade food stamps for drugs. This woman might have been the drug lord's wife/girlfriend/sister.

Why does this merit an hour of "Ronald Reagan was right"?

I caught the first part of the show, and he sounded good. If this is his idea of intelligent discussion of the state of our country, he ought to audition to sit in for R. Limbaugh.

And you have to try really hard to pull that off.

Food assistance is used with a credit card type card that is swiped like any credit card. and it has been for some time now. There's no way to tell.

He's lying.

Wendell is hardly a "right-winger," although he doesn't necessarily agree with every one of my lefty positions. He was against the Iraq war, for Obama in the election, for decriminalization of pot, etc., etc. And the food stamp program is still called the "food stamp" program, even if "stamps" are no longer used. I don't agree with Obama on a couple of issues either, but I wouldn't call him a "right-winger."

I know they offered cards. I didn't know they'd done away with stamps entirely.

The card is like a gift card in credit card form. Each month, a set amount of money is made available. It's swiped like any other card. The guy is lying.

If there's one story I heard over and over from people who learned I worked in social services it was the one about being behind someone using f/stamps in the grocery with expensive items like steak in their cart. What's new is the I-Phone. :eyes:

when it comes up on the display (the only that everyone can see) it says ebt (electronic benefits transfer I think) instead of cash or atm or credit. Or at least that's how it was when I workedat a grocery store. And there's the whole thing of only certain foods being allowed for food stamps or WIC. So you have to seperate your purchases. Also, people usually said EBT or WIC to the cashier because we had to ring it up a little different.

The reason I think he's lying in any case is that he saw so much. You'd have to be standing so close and scrutinizing the whole transaction so carefully. And then he had to finish his transaction and quickly follow her outside and see her getting into a Cadillac. And she had an I-Phone? How did he see that? Was she talking while separating her groceries and paying? The whole thing smacks of a bogus rant.

I've heard it frm people too often. I could have written the script. What surprised me is that I rarely saw people shopping with food assistance and when I did I don't think I ever scrutinized their cart of groceries. Maybe that was because I knew first hand how little income people have to qualify.

the stamps were still valid because not every grocery store took the cards. I have no idea whether you can still opt for the stamps, but it's not impossible.

In my experience with the program, it's not happening.

I love Phil Hendrie-- the wearwolf bit is great. I used to listen to lionel and Mike on WABC. I think Mike's a jerk but Lionel is funny as all get out. And no, I never liked the Greaseman.....

After listening to a few minutes of ranting about the welfare queen with the iPhone and the new car, I started wondering, who is this douche? It's legitimate to ask whether the current welfare system is fair and/or subject to being taken advantage of, but this guy was going off like Limbaugh about how it's not fair that somebody who gets welfare assistance has a nicer car than a working stiff like him. And maybe that's true, but anectodal bullshit like that doesn't mean anything. Maybe she was cheating the system, or maybe she'd borrowed the car and/or the phone from somebody else. Who knows what her situation was? More importantly, assuming she was taking advantage of the system, how often does that happen? The "welfare queen" is a Reagan-area false stereotype that the RW likes to think is not only real, but the norm. This asshole wasn't helping anything. I hope they don't use him as a sub again.

is a serious offense that can result (and does) in equally serious penalties. If you are doing it or thinking of doing it, don't. Unless you think you can get the president to pardon you, you don't want to lie to the government on a welfare application form or otherwise.

This woman may have someone in her household who is eligible for assistance with obtaining food or may be shopping for someone who gets food stamps quite legitimately.

Recently, we drove a disabled, homeless woman to the grocery store. She used her food stamps to pay. Had we shopped on her behalf so that she would not have to go to the store, people might have asked why we were "using food stamps."

If you are taking care of children of a relative under certain circumstances, you might qualify for assistance in buying food just as if you were eligible for some other reason.

Johnny Wendel and Lionel are ignorant so they raise all these bogus "issues." I wish we could listen to Thom Hartmann all day long.

I miss Morning Sedition like mad. It was such an awesome show. Lawton Smalls (Kent Jones) was my absolute favorite, but so much of it was great. Sammy the Stem Cell, Rapture Watch, Johnny K Street.

AAR was so fabulous when it started. Now, the only one of their shows I listen to regularly is Hartmann. I catch Rachel from time to time, too. I'm so glad the MSNBC thing is working for her.

How so? Johnny Wendell has nothing to do with AAR. He's a part-timer with Clear Channel's KTLK and when AAR, NovaM, or another network runs "Best Of" programs, KTLK will often substitute Wendell instead of playing the old program.

Sam Seder and Mark Maron do a daily Internet show from AAR. And Kent Jones works with Rachel Maddow at MSNBC.

Her show comes on at 3:00 on KPOJ-Portland (I get it online) and I had intended to tune in when I finished work (yep, retiree, had to go back to work, thank you, Mr. Bush), but your post changed my plan. Just one point of interest on the "welfare queen" idiocy--the other day I was checking out of a retail store and remarked to the clerk I couldn't find one item I wanted. She recommended I try Goodwill. Said she gets some great bargains there, and then she mentioned all the Lexuses, Cadillacs, BMWs, etc. in the Goodwill parking lots these days. Made me realize having a "nice car" does not necessarily mean one is well off. Especially now (thanks again, Bushie). Too many of us are just one paycheck away from economic disaster, and if food stamps helps get people through these ugly times, I'm all for it. Pretty sure the lady didn't buy the iPhone with food stamps (cards here, too), but perhaps it was a gift from someone during better times. Maybe she's about to pawn it. I hear pawn shops are doing a brisk business lately!
