Programs are anti-marriage - study
Source: nydn

The broadcast networks are undermining marriage and thrusting a barrage of once taboo topics on unwitting viewers, according to a new study from the Parents Television Council.

Indeed, messages about non-marital sex outpaced references to successful married sex by nearly a 3 to 1 ratio, according to PTC researchers.

Even more troublesome was TV's obsession with once-taboo subjects such as threesomes, partner swapping, pedophilia and prostitution, the study maintains.

Representatives from ABC, CBS, the CW and Fox declined to comment on the report.

4. "That's no lady; that's my wife."
How many centuries have we heard that? Entertainment has undermined marriage since people started getting married.

The simplest method of removing crap from TV is to stop watching crap on TV.

5. If you don't tell people about raping children, they'll never do it?
That seems to be the idiotic message from these people, the same ones who say if you keep teenagers ignorant about sex, they'll ignore those raging hormones and stay pure as the driven snow until they're 30 and have been married at least five years.

I wish somebody would send these prissy pursed lips people back to the lunatic fringe, already. Nearly every rotten thing going on in this country right now is their fault either through their nanny laws or their votes for war hawks and fiscal lunatics.

Ignorance never solved a damned thing and they're exhibit A for proving that statement.

10. fundy news
It seems to me that the rethugs are desperately looking for any issue that can be brought forward to distract everyone from their crimes. Anything they can do to rev up the crazies out there and make them vote. I hope that intelligence prevails and we get rid of some of these criminals once and for all. Rove and his minions are the real devils if you want to put it in a religious context. To me they are simply traitors.

13. google the Parent's Television Council, douches who sponsored this "study"
"The gratuitous sex, foul language, and violence on TV (along with stories and dialogue that create disdain for authority figures, patriotism, and religion) are having a negative effect on children"

I love how anyone with money can found an organization and churn out completely one-sided biased "studies" and insist that we treat them as actual factual research :eyes:

25. This is what they have been doing for the last 30 years or
so. It's what Sen. Obama was talking about with his "bitter voters" comment during the primaries. That the MSN didn't know he was referring to the fact that rethug administrations have never helped the average "Joe/Joann" and have never kept a campaign promise has led to them (the voters) becoming bitter about real issues and promises that concern their actual wellbeing and welfare. That in turn, has allowed the rethugs to bring up divisive and pointless issues like guns, religion and gays. The MSN carried water for the rethug (and Hillary) lie that Obama was calling the voters bitter (without reason) about guns etc. They took the whole line of thinking out of context and got away with it. I guess the Obama team thought it was useless to pursue the truth of the matter.

12. dumb article. I wonder what a headline for violence would say?
"report shows media depicts images of violence 500000000% more than images of peaceful negotiation".

It's ENTERTAINMENT. This article is fucking stupid for a different, more ironic reason: considering the level of casual and extramarital sex on TV is probably pretty damn close to actual trends in American sexual culture. It's not like we're all married and fucking one person happily in this country. Extramarital affair rates are staggering in this country.

I also love how the article sticks pedophilia in with swinging and group sex:
"Even more troublesome was TV's obsession with once-taboo subjects such as threesomes, partner swapping, pedophilia and prostitution, the study maintains." That's right guys, if you're into alternative sexual practices, you're just as "troublesome" as criminal child molesters.

What Puritannical bullshit think tank sponsored this crap? Study by the "Parents Television Council"(blatantly NON-ACADEMIC and therefore completely guaranteed to be plainly and intentionally BIASED rather than conducting research and objectively analyzing the results).

Let's see what the Parents Television Council is all about:
" We are a nonpartisan organization that works with elected and appointed government officials to enforce broadcast decency standards. Most importantly, the PTC produces critical research and publications documenting the dramatic increase in sex, violence and profanity in entertainment. This information is provided free of charge so parents can make informed viewing choices for their own families."

More: "The gratuitous sex, foul language, and violence on TV (along with stories and dialogue that create disdain for authority figures, patriotism, and religion) are having a negative effect on children"

http://www.parentstv.org/PTC/aboutus/main.asp

OH MY GOD WON'T SOMEBODY PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!!!!!!!!! TV and movies are making them into Godless little sex-depraved anarchic Commies who hate Jesus and their Country!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :eyes:

26. to the point of moral corruption? please.
don't buy the tripe this article is peddling...just examine the source. I am clearly aware of the interplay between media and behavioral development, and it is far from cause and effect and more correlative. That is, if you choose to believe academic research and not the hysterical ramblings of a biased organization.

16. What happens when they factor in unsuccessful married sex?
"Indeed, messages about non-marital sex outpaced references to successful married sex by nearly a 3 to 1 ratio"

I do like how they slip that "pedophilia" into the list - personally, I've never seen a positive or even neutral representation of pedophilia in any show I watch, but why let facts get in the way of a good 'stirring up the donors' rant?

28. Or suggest that 50% of marriages fail which is just faulty math
If they are going to determine the percentage they should not...

Take number of divorces in 2007 and divide by number of marriages in 2007.

Those people that divorced in 2007 didn't get married in 2007.

22. "Action"
Senator Powell: Now you are perilously close to being cited for contempt, Mister Dragon!
Peter Dragon: I'm already in contempt! I'm in contempt of all you old whores and hypocrites! At least I'm giving the American people what they want!
Senator Powell: And just exactly what is it that you think they want?
Peter Dragon: I'll tell "yew" exactly what they want, Senator: they want chase scenes and car crashes! They want firm breasts and tight-assed Latino men! They want their cowboys to be strong and silent. They want their cops to bend the rules to get the job done. They want the boy to get the girl. They want the alien to be killed... unless he's cute. They want the good guy to win. They want the bad guy to die, hopefully in the biggest explosion the budget will allow. But most importantly, Senator, they want to walk into a theater and for ninety minutes be able to forget about the fucking mess you have made of this nation.

and

Senator: Mr. Dragon, you have a young daughter, do you not?
Peter Dragon: Let's not go there...
Senator: Her name is Georgia, she's about 10 years old I believe.
Peter Dragon: Don't do this.
Senator: Has little Georgia seen your film entitled "Ripcord"?
Peter Dragon: She can't get in Senator, it's rated R.
Senator: Which contains 357 acts of violence, 175 profanities, and four scenes of lesbian sex. She proud of her daddy for that one?
Wendy Ward: I think we should just go.
Senator: How can you look that sweet little girl in the eye?
Peter Dragon: I manage. I never voted to subsidize the growing of tobacco, while turning my back on food programs for starving kids. I've never vetoed a gun control bill; all MY guns are fake, Senator. I've never rushed to the defense of Kuwaiti oil fields, while ignoring genocide in Africa, because big oil companies that line your fat pockets aren't concerned with black Africa. Those are all productions of YOUR company Senator, this company right here!
