How to record Internet radio

For Windows only.

I've used a program called Replay Radio for a long while to record
Internet radio. This is a US product and lets you set up a schedule
to allow recording Internet streamed audio from your PC or laptop sound
card. You need to have Real player and Media Player installed in some
cases, for Replay Radio to be able to access the stream and record it.

The key things you need for Replay Radio to work are:
1. knowing the URL of the audio stream
2. having both Real player and Media player installed
3. knowing the time when the program you want to record comes on the air
and goes off the air.

You will have to 'play around' with Replay Radio to learn how to use it.

I'm not an employee of the company that makes this software, but I've used
it since 2006, and find it very useful for recording Internet radio that
is not podcast.

is where you can download a free trial version---caveat: it will only record
5 minutes of audio.

It will take some playing around to understand how to use this, but once
you get it in hand, it's easy and very useful. I suggest you work with
the 'audio I'm hearing now' feature--which means audio coming off your
speakers/sound card.

Just an idea for those of you who are into listening to Internet radio.
This sw will only record serially---you cannot record multiple shows that
air at the same time.

Five years ago, I paid $50 just to be able to record WMA streams. But they had a monopoly.

Today, there is no need to give Applian your money. There are many pieces of software that do the same thing, many of them better, and are free of cost. Many are open-source. This is especially true for recording sound from your computer's sound system.

And Applian software is incompatible with a lot of program-control software, to hook you into buying THEIR program-control software.

If you want to record WM or RM (Windows Media or Real Media) data streams, it is more difficult to find programs to replace theirs, but they are out there. The new Microsoft Windows Media Player can also record non-"protected" WMA/ASF streams. But fortunately, most steaming audio today is MP3, OGG, or AAC, all of which are pretty simple to record. WMA and RM are disliked because they are so hard to use.

Linux has a lot of software that can record audio data streams, and their video stream recorders are quite good, too. Many native Linux programs that do this -- like VLC Client -- are now available for Windows and Mac.

I don't suggest that you trash what you have now, but a few weeks of poking around may reveal a whole world of new features and power.

I've not found a program that lets one set a recording schedule vs. a 'record now'
concept.

Also, Replay Radio will record in Mp3 format.

I have looked for other software to do what I need done--record to a
schedule, to mp3, and with varying sound quality(e.g. music or voice) and I've not found
any products that do this.

I agree with you that Applian, aka Replay Radio, has a
monopoly and I wish they did not.

If you know of free products that will: record to a specific schedule,
record to mp3 in quality of 56, or 128k, please, let us know what these
products are.

Real Player will record, but only at the moment-- you cannot set up a
schedule of times/days for it to record, or am I wrong about this?
