How do I fight back against these lies? How does one find the Money Trail?
Edited on Tue Aug-25-09 04:04 PM by Tigress DEM
Former classmates of mine from high school who I've recently encountered on Facebook have these links to Right Wing garbage and I'd like to set them straight.

I'm sure this "Citizens Commission on Human Rights International" is NO "Mental Health Watchdog" but a right wing scam organization spreading propaganda and I've seen people on DU "out" these kind of organizations by finding out who they actually bow and scrape to, but I've never done it myself. Can anyone help me get to the facts about this Right Wing TOOL?

IF they really WERE a mental health watchdog, they certainly wouldn't be against mental health "parity" and wouldn't make the claim that most mental health patients were "cured" when their health care benefits ran out.

They are also comparing programs that try to detect mental illness early and treat it not only from the aspect of the child in school, but by helping their families as well and making it out to be some "Orwellian Plot". Makes my stomach turn and I'm mad as hell that they are convincing people I know USED to have intelligence to stand up against programs that actually stand to do some good in the community and lessen costs of dealing with the aftermath of untreated mental illness.

<snip>

Both bills forward massive increases in government funding of mental health programs that turn America into a full blown therapeutic state.

The Senate bill (the Affordable Health Choices Act) includes:

*

Funding for community based “Health Teams,” which will establish a system of early identification and referral for children at risk for developmental or behavioral problems. (Section 212)
*

Allocation of up to $5 billion every year for School Based Health Clinics to provide such services as: mental health assessments (screening), crisis intervention, treatment, counseling and referral to emergency psychiatric care. (Section 312)
*

A five-year program for the Center for Disease Control to provide public health “interventions,” screenings and clinical referrals for individuals between 55 and 64 years of age. (Section 322)
*

The creation of a new “paraprofessional child and adolescent mental health worker.” The legislation states that this is “…an individual who is not a mental or behavioral health service professional, but who works at the first stage of contact with children and families who are seeking mental or behavioral health services.” (Section 402)

The House bill (H.R. 3200) includes:

*

This bill also calls for the establishment of School Based Health Clinics that will provide mental health assessments (screening), crisis intervention, treatment, counseling and referral to emergency psychiatric care. (Section 2511)
*

Specific funding for mental health counselors and marriage and family therapists. (Section 1308)
*

The bill creates a home visitation program for families with young children or which are expecting children or who have certain “risk factors.” The program, which is stated as voluntary, provides assessments regarding matters of “age appropriate behaviors,” for children, prevention of family violence and referral to outside services. (Section 1713)
*

The bill mandates a sweeping mental health parity, which could well encompass all 374 diagnoses in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) and opens the door to coverage for everything from phase of life problem to sibling rivalry disorder. The costs would be horrendous. (Section 114)

The bill provides for unlimited mental health benefits. As there is no objective or medical test for psychiatric disorders, this is a virtual blank check to the mental health industry. Psychiatric patients are traditionally “cured” when their insurance benefits run out. In this bill, those benefits never run out. And without anything other than a psychiatrist’s opinion about whether or not the person’s “illness” is “cured,” this legislation becomes nothing more than taxpayer funded billions to psychiatrists, who will continue their jihad of mass drugging of Americans.

1. It's actually usually really easy to do this...
in this case, I googled "Citizens Commission on Human Rights International" and found its Web site, cchr.org. Then I clicked on the "About Us" section, where they explain they were founded in 1969 by the Church of Scientology. And, if you know anything about Scientology, you know that it's virulently anti-psychology.

Then, I checked out the wikipedia page on the organization, which says that it even has tax-exempt status as part of the church. It footnotes much of its information, which is really, really important if you're going to take your info from a wiki page.

2. Thank you so much.
Makes sense. I guess I almost expected this to be connected to an actual rethug PAC, but it just goes to show you that they don't really deserve their 501c3 status, do they?

<snip>
The Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) is a non-profit, public benefit organization dedicated to investigating and exposing psychiatric violations of human rights. It also ensures that criminal acts within the psychiatric industry are reported to the proper authorities and acted upon.

CCHR was founded in 1969 by the Church of Scientology and the internationally acclaimed author, Dr. Thomas Szasz, Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at the State University of New York Health Science Center, Syracuse. At that time, the victims of psychiatry were a forgotten minority group, warehoused under terrifying conditions in institutions around the world. Because of this, CCHR penned a Mental Health Declaration of Human Rights that has served as its guide for mental health reform.
**************************************

Their "Mental Health Declaration of Human Rights" disregards one crucial fact: IF someone is truly having a mental health crises #6 is NEVER gonna happen. Someone who has lost it to the point of needing to be hospitilized almost NEVER understands what benefit it is to them to be locked up. During a manic episode? Right. Someone who is so depressed they believe their only solution is to kill themselves? Their ability to understand is severely compromised at that point.

BUT C explains it all.

For all those families that think their loved ones are being indoctrinated into giving all their life savings to Scientology and are not in lucid control of their mental facilties to be doing this cultish behavior, sorry Charlie, you can't put them in the psych ward and make sure they really WANT to do this of their own free will and in their right mind. NO REFUNDS on donations to the CHURCH OF SCIENTOLOGY.... period.

Mental Health Declaration of Human Rights
cchr.org

All great organizations set forth codes by which they align their purposes and activities. The Mental Health Declaration of Human Rights articulates the guiding principles of CCHR and the standards against which human rights violations by psychiatry are relentlessly investigated and exposed.

A. No person shall be given psychiatric or psychological treatment against his or her will.

B. No person, man, woman or child, may be denied his or her personal liberty by reason of mental illness, so-called, without a fair jury trial by laymen and with proper legal representation.

C. No person shall be admitted to or held in a psychiatric institution, hospital or facility because of their religious, political or cultural beliefs and practices.

D. Any patient has:

1) The right to be treated with dignity as a human being.

2) The right to hospital amenities without distinction as to race, color, sex, language, religion, political opinion, social origin or status by right of birth or property.

3) The right to have a thorough physical and clinical examination by a competent registered general practitioner of one's choice, to ensure that one's mental condition is not caused by any undetected and untreated physical illness, injury or defect, and the right to seek a second medical opinion of one's choice.

4) The right to fully equipped medical facilities and appropriately trained medical staff in hospitals, so that competent physical, clinical examinations can be performed;

5) The right to choose the kind or type of therapy to be employed, and the right to discuss this with a general practitioner, healer or minister of one's choice.

6) The right to have all the side effects of any offered treatment made clear and understandable to the patient, in written form and in the patient's native language.

3. Dr Thomas Szasz, skilled at half-truths as proof positive. Scary.

I THINK that really depends on what God is telling you to do. "Go and forgive your neighbor." Yeah, sounds right.

"Go start a war with Iraq based on lies and fake some evidence so you may be glorified in my name for ridding the world of Saadam Hussein." Um, not the God I know.

4. I don't think it's so easy. How does one find out about who is funding a front group.
they usually do not volunteer this sort of information on their website. Any tips on this aspect much appreciated.
