Liberal bias?
We've all heard of the mythical "liberal bias" in the media. Does anyone know a decent site that debunks this myth?

Cheers

2. Liberal bias
was started when Reagan was president. Maybe it's time people looked up the word. Liberal:
Not restricted
Giving freely, generous
Broad-minded
Tolerant of views differing from one's own
Of democratic or republican forms of government, as distinguised from monarchies or aristocracies
Favoring reform or progress

I can see nothing wrong about a liberal press.

3. Looks interesting...Thanks!
I did a Rumsfeld and read the Exec Summary LOL (I'll finish the rest later)

One thing it stated is that there is a clear difference in the tone between the liberal and conservative papers. This is especially of note since it's the conservatives who always point a finger at "shrill" liberals and it's the conservatives who have expressed being baffled about the level of anger among liberals.

4. Thanks
I only read the executive summary, but it confirms something I've thought for a while.

Conservatives are more partisan in their reporting than liberals. By definition, liberal papers are more likely to show both sides of the story. One of the criticisms of conservatives over the war was that media outlets were being "biased" by showing both sides of the story.

I remember a Labour MP saying something similar. He said that conservatives can rely on the solid support of some papers, while papers like the Guardian (liberal) made it policy to continue to criticise the new labour gov't when it came to power in 1997.

5. Look at Salon - often called "liberal"
They went after Clinton just as much as the right wing papers and, until recently at least, had right wing writers like Andrew Sullivan on their staff.

Liberal press outlets (and there aren't any big ones in the U.S.) seem to try to "prove" that they aren't biased by undermining their own positions, where right wing ones (which most mainstream media has become) have no such need. The right attacks the left and defends the right - no balance, no fear.

6. Except for Fox News Channel, there is no bias

Read "What Liberal Media?" by Eric Alterman and "Banana Republicans" by Shelton Rampton & John Stauber. They explain it pretty well.

I work for a local Fox affiliate's newsroom. Most local FOX affiliates don't cover politics very much; we're much more focused on car crashes, fires, shootings, and how your Christmas tree will catch fire and kill you.

There is no liberal/conservative bias. There is a bias towards sensationalism and "WATCH OUR SHOW OR SOMETHING WE'RE GOING TO TELL YOU ABOUT WILL KILL YOU!" Franken discusses this in "Liars" pretty extensively, too.

TV stations make money. We serve our advertisers. We get advertising money from Popeye's, so we run lots of stories about the Atkins diet. We air 4-minute interviews with the American Idol kids to hype up our network's programming so we can make more money. We blow everythign out of proportion so that people watch so they can talk to their co-workers about how absolutely appalled and outraged they are over what they saw.

The most sought-after demographic (that allows us to charge advertisers the most) is the middle-aged, white male and their soccer mom wives. Murdoch appeals to them not out of a political affiliation (he can't even vote here), he is a very smart businessman and knows how to make money.

Conservatives make money off of TV and radio station, liberals read.
