In the Mind of a Neo-Con
It's funny in a way how when you read about ultra-right nutjobs, they seem almost too horrible to be true. How would anyone be that angry, that willing to swallow what the media gives them? Then, you come face to face with one.
It was a slow night at work and me and my co-workers were chatting it up with a friend of the cook's. After trading some friendly barbs and a Smurf joke with each other, the customer (with a friend of his now in tow) asked me how I felt about Bush. Being the bleeding-heart liberal that I am, I said I didn't like him. The customer got a little upset and I told him about the so-called weapons of mass destruction where him and the other guy told me they "just haven't foudn them yet" and it's all the "liberal nazi media" that is making America out to be evil. I stayed calm and asked if Bush supports the troops, why is he cutting the veterians' funds? I got the news that the government has been screwing them over for years as if it was almost no big deal despite the fact that one of them had a veterian father.
I was getting sick of their liberal nazi comments and mentioned nicely that there were crazies on both sides like Ann Coulter. This is where it gets sick. Both men proclaimed that Ann is always right, tells the truth about everything, she was one of the guy's dream girl, and that she and Margret Thatcher should rule the world (they high-fived eachother with their fists after saying that). Maybe it didn't help that I called Ann a nasty human being, but combine the Pat Buchanan support (they said he was demonized by the liberal media) and calling Nader a psycho, I was going to be sick.
Excusing myself to wash dishes and take care of the garbage. Coming back, the customer and crew wondered where I was where I was and I sweetly said that I was taking care to the recycleing. It's times like this that really test your open-mindedness, urge to forget all politeness and scream at them, and the urge to start another arguement because they'll never budge. Funny thing was that the other guy's wife and young son were quiet the whole time. Anyone else have any crazy neo-con stories to share? And how did you handle it?
Love,
Yaoi Huntress Earth

1. I ask the Reagan Question
"Are you better off now than you were four years ago?"

Most of them aren't but say they are, or say that it was the fault of Clinton's penis. I usually tell them to keep voting Republican if they want recession, GI deaths, and a lower standard of living.

Most are too dense to get it, so most of the time I ignore them. Why waste your breath?

2. Encounters like those
Are what prompts the so called "intellectual elitism" asked about in another thread.

How can one *not* feel intellectually superior to someone who honestly believes Bush is a good President, the media is liberal, and that Ann Coulter is worthy of a sexual fantasy?

3. True
The trick is not to become self-rightous because of this.

4. Let Us Remember that...
NAZI philosophy goes against what all Liberals believe in which is progess, equality, and humanity.
By the way, Pat Bukkkanan is one of those people who denies that the Holicaust occured. So I really don't care that BASTARD has to say about anything!!!

6. next time
next time some as*hole gets up in your face about being a fanatical right-winger, just ignore them.

Getting into verbal arguments with these people is just a waste of time.

I had a guy at work tell me the other day he has a stockpile of weapons ready for the liberals to 'just come and take them... we'll see what happens..'

I said that's nice, smiled, and kept on walking... it's not worth anyone's time to even give them the time of day. They wont change, and arguing just get's your blood pressure up. :)

10. Neo-con/ Republican Legion (claims to be american legion)
I first insisted that our military oath of enlistment be posted.

we all swore to uphold and defend the US Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic.

then I insisted the oath of citizenship also be posted.

this took a change of leadership.

then I gave up and informed the post commander I had no reason to associate with any "Republican Legion" and that I whose instead life membership in an American Legion post.

To those members of that local post who try to get me to rejoin:
I say
"Get thee behind me Satan!"
and explain they oppose freedom of speech and therefore oppose our sacred Constitution.
"There is nothing American about your Republican Legion Post.
Zieg heil to dubya all you want.
Just don't try to fool anyone that your 4th reich is in any way American."

They turned out to be also a klavern.
The klan is even less American than the Republican Legion.

Yet in Missippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, California,
Pennsylvania, Texas, Louisiana,
right wingnuts are in control of "american" Republican Legion Posts;
police departments and Sheriff's departments.

You did ask for personal experience.
I am an active Democrat in those states I mentioned above, and know personally.
(whereof I speak)

11. These guys must be challenged on some level
These guys scare me. Their mentality is right out of the old German Frie Korps post WWI, which lead to the SA and SS.

I just read the Hate Mail section of this site, and it is not at all hard to imagine these guys forming midnight death squads should the right-wingers get even bolder. Right-wing talk radio is filling the roll of Hitler's speeches in inciting and indoctrinating these simple-minded hate mongers who cannot deal with complexity or other mindedness. America is getting more polarized by the year, and there is less goodwill being expressed between the two sides. Dialog is dissappearing, and being replaced with sloganeering. It is time to complain to the radio stations carrying these guys and tell them you are boycotting them. Tell these stations that the hate these guys spout has turned you away as a customer, that these programs' hate is unsatisfactory, destructive to the national democratic spirit and has simply become too ugly to listen too.

That said, I think it wrong to do as many suggest here and just don't reply to live encounters like the one described in the resteraunt. True, you cannot change their mind with any single impromtu rebuttal, but I think saying something about their hatred is in order. For example: "Whoa, that hatred is too rich for my blood." or "Have you ever though about where that line of thought ends up?" or "Sorry, that kind of thought goes against my religion." or "My grandad died in Germany in WWII fighting those ideas." etc...

Smile, be concilatory if you have to, but challenge the hatred as politely and firmly as you can. Plant the seed that it is they who have gone over the line.

12. What is.......
a Neo-Con exactly? I asked someone this and they said it was a liberal who got mugged. :o

And then I see a website of "traditional conservatives" bashing neo-conservatives. So actually I think you're using it wrong. A neo-con is a conservative who's too liberal for traditional conservatives. But I could be wrong...

13. Actually...
...I think a neo-conservative is too far right for traditonal conservatives. Also, I think a number of neo-cons used to be liberals (think David Horowitz)but are/were too far left for traditonal liberals.
