Daily U.S. Casualties 4/14/2004

As of Tuesday, 678 U.S. service members have died since the beginning of military operations in Iraq last year, according to the Department of Defense. Of those, 484 died as a result of hostile action and 194 died of nonhostile causes.

The British military has reported 58 deaths; Italy, 17; Spain, eight; Bulgaria, five; Ukraine, four; Thailand, two; Denmark, El Salvador, Estonia and Poland have reported one each.

Since May 1, when President Bush declared that major combat operations in Iraq had ended, 540 U.S. soldiers have died -- 375 as a result of hostile action and 165 of nonhostile causes, according to the military.

Since the start of military operations, 3,269 U.S. service members have been injured as a result of hostile action, according to the Defense Department's figures as of Friday.

The latest deaths reported by the military:

One Marine was killed by mortar fire Tuesday.

One soldier died Tuesday in an attack on a convoy headed to Najaf.

The latest identifications reported by the military and family members:

Marine Cpl. Daniel R. Amaya, 22, Odessa, Texas, died Sunday from hostile fire in Anbar province; assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, Calif.


Army Pfc. Nathan Brown, 21, South Glens Falls, N.Y.; died Sunday when a rocket-propelled grenade hit his vehicle in Samarra; assigned to the 1st Armored Division, Army National Guard, Glens Falls, N.Y.


Marine Lance Cpl. Phillip E. Frank, 20, Elk Grove, Ill., died Thursday from hostile fire in Anbar province; assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.


Marine Lance Cpl. Torrey L. Gray, 19, Patoka, Ill., died Sunday from hostile fire in Anbar province; assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, Calif.


Marine 1st Lt. Oscar Jimenez, 34, San Diego, died Sunday from hostile fire in Anbar province; assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, Calif.


Marine Pfc. George D. Torres, 23, Long Beach, Calif., died Sunday from hostile fire in Anbar province; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.
