Daily U.S. casualties 7/4/2004

As of Friday, 858 U.S. service members have died since the beginning of military operations in Iraq last year, according to the Defense Department. Of those, 636 died as a result of hostile action and 222 died of nonhostile causes. The military did not provide an update Saturday.

The British military has reported 59 deaths; Italy, 18; Spain, eight; Bulgaria and Poland, six each; Ukraine, four; Slovakia, three; Thailand, two; Denmark, El Salvador, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia and the Netherlands have reported one each.

Since May 1, 2003, when President Bush declared that major combat operations in Iraq had ended, 720 U.S. soldiers have died -- 527 as a result of hostile action and 193 of nonhostile causes, according to the military as of Friday.

The latest deaths reported by the military:

A U.S. Marine assigned to the I Marine Expeditionary Force died Saturday after being wounded in action

Friday in Anbar province.

There were no new identifications reported by the military.

2. Last week was pretty bad
British armed forces had two killed.

For last week, I counted 11 American active duty deaths, with some dying of previous combat wounds and perhaps two accidental deaths.

Icasualties has the American active duty death toll in Iraq at 865.

Check out the news achive for last week at:

http://www.icasualties.org/oif/news.aspx

This is the old "lunaville" site. Their collection of news articles on Iraq related casualty stories gives those who are interested a good picture of the security situation in Iraq. It also carries the stories of the returning dead and wounded which are usually only carried in local media.
