The US-China Economic and Security Review Commission will hold a public hearing on March 10, 2005, in Washington, D.C. to consider China’s Proliferation Practices and Role in the North Korea Crisis. The hearing will examine China’s progress to date in curbing proliferation activities by its firms as well as China’s role in the Six-Party Talks addressing North Korea’s nuclear ambitions. These topics are particularly timely given recent U.S. sanctions levied against Chinese firms for transferring missile technology to Iran and North Korea’s announcement that it intends to pull out of the Six-Party Talks.
The Commission will hear from senior officials from the Departments of State and Defense and experts from academia and think tanks. Key topics for discussion will be (1) China’s adherence to its nonproliferation obligations and progress in developing a comprehensive export control regime, (2) recent U.S. sanctions levied on Chinese firms transferring WMD-related technology to countries of concern, and (3) China’s role as an intermediary in the Six-Party Talks with North Korea.
Congressman Curt Weldon (R-PA) will lead off the afternoon session with a report on his recent trip to meet with North Korean officials in Pyongyang. Additional Members of Congress have been invited to apprise the Commission of their concerns on the important topics at issue.
