Work force getting older: report
More than half of new jobs reportedly go to people aged 55 and older.
March 14, 2005: 8:36 AM EST

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - The percentage of older workers in the economy has continued to post gains, according to a published report.

Since the March 2001 recession, there has been a 3.7 percentage-point increase in the labor-force participation rate — the proportion of the population in the work force — of people 55 and older, reflecting demographic and economic changes and lifestyle choices, according to USA Today.

1. Lifestyle choice = pension ripped off, never earned enough to save,
forced to find a shit job to pay the bills.

Combine that with the horror that thirtysomething human resources drones have of anyone over 50 and the employment picture gets increasingly grim.

People over 50 should be able to settle into more sedentary work where a lifetime of experience in their field would be a great asset. Instead, they're seen as old and shabby and relegated to the type of jobs that should be filled by strapping teenagers and college age kids.

The world sucks if you're over 50 and have benefited from 30 years of GOP economic mismanagement. As we are, so you will be unless you work your ass off to change things.

3. on the other hand
kids coming out of college have a hard time finding a job in their field, taking often positions way below their qualifications. Entry level positions return to cold-calling, copier, coffee getter, an inquisition about the preference between paper or plastic, or whether or not to include fries. There is something wrong in this picture. No wonder people are "confused" about the SSec crisis, the elderly are supposed to be supported by the young - the generation contract. But how can the young support their elderly, if they don't have jobs and instead grandma and grandpa have to work to get medical insurance or at least money to by the drugs they need! Very convenient to have such a jobless recovery that only lets experienced workers currently employed have a chance at getting a job, or force them to keep their job at lower pay!
