Homeowners Join Tax Club to Ease Burden
Joining tax club can ease burden
Some homeowners find making monthly installment payments provides some relief

With property taxes soaring in some communities, the squeeze is on for those who struggle to scratch up thousands of dollars each year so they can remain in their homes.

The pressure hits the elderly on fixed incomes, retirees, working families and just about anyone who owns property.

But an old idea that is getting a second look in some Maine towns may offer a way to ease the burden, officials say.

A tax club, according to the Maine Municipal Association, is a monthly installment plan that can be an effective way for taxpayers to budget their property tax payments and avoid incurring interest charges. It can also help level municipal cash flow.

"As property tax bills have gotten larger, making payments on a monthly basis for many people is easier to do" ...

1. Like a Christmas Club at a bank? Excellent idea. Too bad the towns don't realize that
if they offered such an option themselves, they'd save a lot of money in the long run by cutting down on delinquencies.

3. Don't give the taxing authorities any ideas...
...the next thing you know they will be requiring us to pay monthly.

4. Actually, they should give the people who pay monthly a little discount.
They have the use of the money sooner, after all.
