Florida: State bars Allstate policy sales
Allstate agents in Florida can't sell new auto policies this morning. Renters' coverage and boat insurance are out, too.

State regulators have put Allstate out of business in an effort to strong-arm information from the company in an ongoing battle over high rates and business practices.

With the muscle of a favorable court ruling behind him, Florida Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty expects Allstate Floridian will soon allow his office free access to its records and thus end the shutdown.

With a signed affidavit from company officers promising unconditional compliance, McCarty said Wednesday he'd lift the then hours-old order against Allstate doing any new business in the state.

More entertainment and/or need of vigilance for Floridians watching the seesaw between Allstate and Florida's Insurance Commissioner.

2. Who do I root for?

On the one hand, Allstate is a big insurance company that has been screwing it's customers. On the other hand, you have a government agency asking for complete access to all their books and records (presumably, including customer information). Which should I be more concerned about, privacy or getting ripped off?

3. Root for the state this time.
I honestly don't think they're looking for personal information on policy holders. They are (finally!) making an attempt in find out why we're getting screwed on our homeowners insurance. The Florida legislature has been hammered by irate residents over the whole rate thing. (Mine has nearly tripled in the last 3 years.) Allstate has continuously thumbed their nose at the state, completely refusing to cooperate with requests for information.

We've seen a steady decline in the numbers of insurers writing homeowners policies since Andrew in 92. A number of the bigger companies have cut back on the HO policies they write or stopped writing them completely, but continue to rake in premiums on other more profitable lines (life & auto).

4. My concern wasn't really that the
Florida insurance commissioner's office was going to misuse the information, but rather where and how will it be stored and who else may get access to it. As far a personal information goes, it's going to be hard to make their case if they can't see both how policy holders are being treated, and what the personal circumstances of the homeowner are. I live in MA and have no direct stake in this either from a privacy or monetary standpoint, but given the anger here on DU about govt getting access to corporate records, it made me stop and think about it.

5. IIRC, Allstate acknowledged at one time its uses policyholders income as basis for rates.
Just guessing, this may be the reason for the database request. Under those terms, neighbors may be paying vastly different rates for homes with same assessed value because of some determiner of their ability to pay.

Then again, as Allstate, I would be wary because of Florida's incestual relationship with state own insurer Citizen.

6. ALLSTATE IS HORRIBLE
I RECENTLY MOVED TO RI FROM MASS AND GOT ALLSTATE INS. I
TERMINATED MY POLICY BECAUSE I WAS TRADING IN MY OLD VEHICLE
ON A NEW ONE. I WENT TO THE LOCAL OPFFICE AND ASKED TO HAVE MY
POLICY TRANSFERRED TO MY NEW VEHICLE AND THEY STATED I HAD TO
PAY A RE-INSTATEMENT FEE OF 174.00..OK FINE PAID THAT AND THEN
WAS TOLD IT QOULD TAKE 24-48 HOURS FOR THE POLICY TO TRANFER
AND TO GET A BINDER SENT TO THE DEALERSHIP. NEEDLESS TO SAY 5
DAYS LATER STILL NO BINDER AND NO CAR DUE TO THAT FACT. WHEN I
CALL ALLSTATE I'M TOLD THAT MY PAPERWORK "WAS IN A PILE
" TO BE WORKED AND THERE WAS NOTHING ANYONW COULD DO TO
HELP ME I HAD TO WAIT FOR UNDERWRITING. NOW I'VE MISSED THREE
DAYS OF WORK BECAUSE MY NEW CAR IS STILL SITTING AT THE
DEALERSHIP WAITING FOR A BINDER THAT MAY NEVER COME. ITS FUNNY
HOW THEY KNOW WHO I AM WHEN THEY WANT A PAYMENT BUT WHEN I
NEED THEM TO DO THEIR JOB AND FAX SOME PAPERWORK I GET
TRANSFERRED TO 10 DIFFERENT PEOPLE WHO GIVE ME NOTHING BUT THE
SAME RUN AROUND. SO NOW GUESS WHAT I SWITCHED TO NATIONWIDE
AND WILL FINALLY HAVE MY CAR TOMORROW. ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS
"IN GOOD HANDS" YEAH RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
